You do realize your scenario there doesn't make any sense, right? If Lorenzo won the race, Rossi could clinch the title by finishing 4th. If Lorenzo was 2nd, Rossi needed to be 9th. If Lorenzo was 3rd, Rossi needed to be 13th, and if Lorenzo was 4th or worse, then Rossi automatically clinched.

Once it became obvious Lorenzo didn't have the pace to chase Stoner down, the championship was Rossi's, as long as he could keep from crashing.
