Who is he s'posed to race? Ago is often considered the GOAT but he also had by FAR the best bike at MV and he only had very sparse competition. Saarinen, Hailwood. I think Rossi has the same problems Doohan did, he is better than the rest. But Doohan always had the best bike. Gotta give credit, Rossi has won world championships on 125, 250, and 500 two strokes, then immediately won on the 990 four stroke. I call that natural versatility. Only bad luck, and an out of control Elias kept him from ending the 990 era as champ. The Duc in the hands of Stoner was untouchable as the japanese struggled. The 800cc bikes and continued interference from electronics have taken away much of his advantage but I still think he is the best rider on the grid. we shall see as he adapts to the Bridgestone tires and gets to tracks where that brand of tires dominate (like Shanghai) Anyway I wish we could go back to the tire smoking, last lap passing of the old 990 days!!!

Ducati completely redesigned Melandris bike to better suit him!!! Ducati is completely committed to their riders and the TEAMS results if you ask me. Stoner won because he had the best team in 07, and that included even him. IF Stoner wins this year it will be because he is maturing and the teams progression with the bike. There have been 4 winners in 4 races this year!!!! I swear people will whine about anything!!!! |

That's the primary reason Rossi didn't go with them. They are even worse than Honda in their philosophy about rider/machine. So in this case Stoner fit the machine well and was able to ride it. Melandri, not so much...
