The 800 era blew in a major way. The 990 era was slightly better, but only very slightly. Hopefully the 1000's will bring us closer to the two stroke days in terms of championship battles.

As the 800cc era came to a merciful close at Valencia, some of the wistful stories about the superb racing of the later years of the 990cc era of MotoGP were trotted out one last time.

Make no doubt, the racing in the first chapter of the MotoGP class, from 2002-06, was magical at points. Bigger engines, bigger braking zones and less electronics created more of a tire-smoking and sliding spectacle than the fly-by-wire, Scalectrix machines that raced in MotoGP from 2007-11.

But there is one common thread of mediocrity between both the 990cc and 800cc eras of MotoGP: Absolutely lousy title races in the premier class every year except one.

There has been only one championship-winning margin of less than 40 points since 500cc machinery disappeared as the premier class after the 2001 season. American Nick Hayden ended Valentino Rossi's streak of five consecutive titles by edging The Doctor by five points in a pulsating, captivating title chase in 2006.

Otherwise, the championship battle down the stretch has been non-existent or fought with spitball guns, whether due to dominance or injury. Four of the 10 titles since 2002 have been decided by 100 points or more, with Rossi's bulge of 147 points over Marco Melandri in 2005 standing alone as the biggest margin........

The 990's were like superbikes, point-shoot, late brake in, turn hard, square it off and power out.

The 800's were more like 2-strokes.
Carry massive corner speed, don't brake as hard, keep your momentum.

Which one seems more safe to you?
Doing more of your edge-of-the-knife riding leaned over or more upright?

Yeah. The choice to reduce engine size, to reduce speed, ended up with simply riding harder and more power in the end. If I remember, tire technology was claimed to be lacking at the time. The real irony is that in F1, the equivalent of MOTOGP, tire traction was limited with grooves for a while, also for the sake of safety. Seems like the guys in charge can't decide what is safe and what isn't. For sure, motorcycles are not.
