He's out of his league.
Look at it this way - the general consensus was that Yamaha was likely to renew his contract provided he had decent results at Laguna and Indy. So, if you believe the test-mule theory is not true - you (Ben Spies) can stay on the works Yamaha team for another year as the rev limit, spec ECU, etc get sorted while collecting a $1-2m a year salary, and have a reasonable chance of fighting for podiums.

So why leave?

Either you protect the Ben Spies brand and beat Yamaha to the punch because you have reason to believe there’s something in the works threatening your ride (Dovi or Rossi are the likely candidate), or you feel you’re not being allowed to maximize your performance due to team priorities (aka Nicky in 2006) and you get out while you still have a chance of getting a decent ride somewhere else, possibly SBK, when their might be rides available.

Listen to the most recent episode of MotoPodcast – Spies talked a bit about trying to ride more along the lines of Lorenzo’s style for a period during the season. Now, that might have been voluntary, but given the differences in riding style (major in terms of brake points and mid-corner) not to mention their physical size, you have to ask - why would Ben try to emulate JL’s style? One possibility is that he was being asked to test new parts, and that Yamaha forced him to set the bike up similarly to JL in order to get relevant data from his laps. IF this were true, it would explain his sudden propensity for crashing, and his general lack of confidence at the limit – something he didn’t lack last year or at Tech 3, with the exception of tire feedback at the beginning of the races on the older Bridgestones.

http://www.motopodcast.com/episode/e...28-italian-job

Lin Jarvis has been talking smack in Ben’s direction since the beginning of the season. Not exactly the tone of support you’d want as a rider in the GP paddock. I think the bottom line is, Yamaha doesn’t want or need Ben splitting points and podiums with JL– it would weaken their position against Honda/Stoner. They’re better off having him run around in 3rd – 5th place while JL escapes at the front. The margin going into 2012 is too small and Yamaha is after a championship.

Yamaha needs a rider who is fast enough to test parts w/o risking it with their #1 rider. Ben has proven to be capable of running front-row times in FP and QP sessions. I just don't think he'd be happy playing the role that Alex Creville did for Doohan, Colin/Nicky for Valentino, etc. His years of "mental fortitude" training with MM are paying off - he's walking away from the supermodel seat at Yamaha to leave room for another team who will be a proper partner. For Ben, that could easily be Suzuki in 2014.

if so, him and melandri could have quite a few 1-2 finishes...assuming melandri doesn't wipe them both out :-P

I'd like to see him finish behind a Kawasaki, that would make my day

They don't run CRTs in SBK, they run Superbikes!

Right, but since there's been no announcement, we have no way of knowing if BMW intends to put him into SBK. Since BMW is pulling the official factory team out of SBK, it stands to reason that they may have something planned for a MotoGP CRT entry, perhaps something similar to the Aprilia ART bikes.

Except they're saying it's a 2 year sbk deal.

Right... "they" are saying it. Julian Ryder may be somewhat plugged in, but he's still just an announcer and writer. Until something is announced, a 2 year BMW SBK deal is nothing but rumor.

Sure, some media members will claim Spies is bolting because he has lost his way on a prototype bike. They'll point to his 10th-place position in the points and his best finish of only fourth this season. They'll say such freak occurrences as a broken helmet visor, bad rear tire, broken sub-frame and food poisoning weren't the residue of bad luck.

And they would all be wrong.

Spies has been a race winner, series champion or Rookie of the Year on a 1000cc Superbike or an 800cc Grand Prix bike every year from 2005 through 2011. That includes three consecutive AMA Superbike Championships against a bad ass named Mat Mladin, a Superbike World Championship as a rookie in 2009, MotoGP Rookie of the Year honors in 2010 and a dominant MotoGP race victory in 2011.

That's not luck, folks. That's talent. Raw speed.

And the wheels don't fall off the wagon that quickly. Especially when you're 28 years old, in your physical and mental prime.

We spoke to Ben Spies for exactly 41 seconds yesterday on a bad cell phone call. One of the few things he said that we could make out of the garbling: "sick of it".

Re: Food poisoning being an "excuse":

Meregalli told MCN:

“We thought it was food poisoning initially but maybe it was a virus. He said he woke at 3am on Saturday night and he was dripping in sweat and then he had some stomach issues. During the warm-up he had some dizzy feelings and after three laps he was completely destroyed. We told him to do what he could for the race and he said he considered pulling in but he wanted to finish the race. After the race he was really bad and he was trying to throw up and he was shaking. He felt better this morning but he said he was completely without energy and we decided it was best for him not to test.”

The rule wasn't broken.
If you are a Spanish hot prospect, and the commercial rights holders (Dorna) are Spanish, and you're personal sponsor is also funneling millions into the biggest team in the sport, then *voila* -- rule change.

SBK and AMA racing are the only entertaining races anymore. Moto2 is decent too, but I have a hard time watching a full MotoGP race anyway. If the rumor is true I'll be pretty happy to watch Spies in SBK. That'll be entertaining.

NOT true!! BMW is simply consolidating a bit. Many, MANY of BMW's highperformance/racing parts are made by a separate company, Alpha Racing. The new deal puts Chasis/suspension development on BMW Italia's shoulders while BMW Factory will still do the engine and electronics. All that's happening is there will be one less BMW team on the field, but there is still full factory support.

But anyways, Spies, Melandri, Checa, Biaggi, Sykes, Rea.....we could be in for some of the best motorcycle racing in a long, long time!
