Craftsman tools warranty
The short of it is. I brought my 30+ year old 3/8 ratchet to Sears because the rotation switch wouldn't always stay in position. (No receipt of course)

Handed it to the guy, he tossed it into a tub and handed me a new one, and said have a good day...Wow it worked just like it was supposed to.

I'm not a pro mechanic but I use my tools all the time (As in once a week at least)

Yeah, for the basic stuff it's really nice to just pop into Sears and swap it out.

I was taught right from the start 30+ years ago as well, with a box full of Craftsman (the majority of my tools), Proto, SK, Matco and Snap-on.

The least amount of grief received was from Craftsman tools, simply because the stores are easy to get to, and they ask NO questions. Money well spent.

for Craftsman! When I was roofing, I'd take my hatchet back (seems to "fall off the truck" and break) roughly every two months so I have a new face on the hammer side!

QFT!

But with me it was more like 40+ years ago!

A very few of the Sears Tool & Hardware stores will actually rebuild a rachet as you wait.

I Ride: two busas that analways seems to be chasing MJN but have my front tires mounted correctly...
Last time I tried to get a ratchet replaced, Sear guy tossed me a repair kit and said good luck. I was like WTF??? He said we don't replace those at this store any more you have to fix them yourself.

Glad some places still honor the warranty the way they should. KMart is not doing them any favors with their "updated" policies.

When i was framing houses for 5 years straight, i had a craftsman tape measure. I would use my tape 200-300 times a day in an 8 hour period. I would receive a brand new tape measure from sears, at least 2-3 times a month. FREE OF COURSE

25 years ago I recieved a Craftsman tape measure for Christmas from my elevator mechanic who I was aprenticing with at that time in Hawaii.

He looked at me when I opened it and said "It's the gift that keeps on giving Derick boy!"

So true....

Derick

I have JC Penneys mechanic's tools. Same warranty, but when I called to get a broken spark plug socket replaced, the operator didn't even know Penneys used to sell tools! Maybe I can get a Craftsman voucher ...

That sucks. The only tool at JC Penny was the guy you were talking too. Had the same deal with Montgomery Wards...Only no tool.. or building..

If they are anything like Snap-on they change their policies depending on the time of the month or the mood of the person you're talking to. I was in charge of the tool program for my squadron in the Navy and I had to deal with mostly Snap-on. Some days they'd cover every single tool I'd throw at them. Some days they would only cover some and say their policy had changed for that specific tool because it breaks so easily or what-not, but then a month later they'd change their mind and replace it free of charge. That said, 99% of my dealings with Snap-On, on a professional level, was great.

that being said they really are quite easy to rebuild.

I remember in my youth, I needed to remove the oil pressure sensor that was mounted on the back of my v8 350. Didn't have the right wrench, so being the enterprising kid that I was, I took my box-end wrench, put it in a vice, and heated it with a torch to bend it 90 degrees.

Funny thing steel is though. Yea, I got the sensor off, but snapped the box end right off.

And of course, it was a craftsman... My dad worked at Sears at one point, and told me to take it back.

Seriously, no questions asked. The guy just handed me a new one. I figured he'd tell me to forget it.

Another Craftsman story: I worked with this guy who grew up near a Craftsman tool foundry. He and his buddies would go through the scrap bin and grab rejects, pop over to the Sears store, and voila! new tools for free!

I noticed that ACE hardware now carries Craftsman tools.. I wonder if they will honor the warranty on my old tools..

We have a new ACE opening about a mile from my house.. Much less hassle than going to the mall.

While you are rebuilding our ratchet put a little molly or lithium grease in there. They run much smoother.

They have changed their warranties recently. Most of the expensive stuff isn't covered like the hand tools anymore.
