Seattle to Salt Lake City (and back)
Had to go to a trade show in SLC, and hadn't done a long ride in a couple of years so just got back from this solo trip.

"Don't blame me, I voted for Sarah Palin." at a gas station in Pendleton, OR

Old hotel and backroad outside of Union, OR

Twin Falls, ID. This bridge is famous for bungee/base jumping

Looking west down the gorge. I'm bringing my golf clubs next time.

Evel Knievel's marker. He tried to jump a motorcycle over this chasm back in the 60's. His name is spelled "Evil" here.

Getting gas "In the Middle of Nowhere" where it's okay to keep alpacas as pets at the gas station.

Made it to the Salt Palace! (Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow)

On the way back headed West past the Great Salt Lake

Stopped by this place. Heard of it?

First town on the border greets folks coming into Nevada with their first casino.

Battle Mountain, NV for the night

I tacked on an unexpected couple of hundred miles to the trip when I was advised the backroad I wanted to take was not a good idea. A local Harley rider told me, "You're gonna run out of gas, and the indians who live up that way aren't gonna give you more. They're gonna knock you out and take your bike instead."

Which was cool because I got a chance to go to Winnemucca, NV and a great car show.

Heading back into Oregon was easily the most deserted stretch of straight road I've been on. No cars or houses to be seen for a hundred miles in 100 degree weather. Had a little bit of an anxiety attack when I got lost inside my helmet and started to imagine what would happen if I got a flat or a mechanical. The vultures I saw flying around didn't help the situation. (Google image obviously - imagine this for 90 minutes)

After that brutal stretch I rewarded myself with a John Day to Pendleton leg.

Columbia River = almost there

Chinook Pass

Home sweet home

About 1700 miles total. Each way was done in about 2 1/2 days. I limited my riding from about 7am to 2pm. The heat was too brutal in the afternoon and kicked my motivation in the ass, not to mention the bike would start to protest a little.

Nice pics and looks like a great ride... I really dig long rides.. Ya see so much in a day.. I heard there's some that are wiped after a hundred miles though... lol

In a month or so I plan on taking a week long ride to who knows where...

I've been on that road via car and had no sense of problem at all, but I didn't ask 'local advice.'

I was thinking about the road heading north out of Elko. It was gonna be 200 miles with no gas.

Judging by the missing plaque on Evel's marker they obviously have crackheads in Twin Falls as well....

How did you like McDermitt, Nevada? I spent some "quality" time there as a youth. Back then there were three gas stations in town, and two were Shell stations, one going North, one going South.

Holy smokes that place is out in the middle of nowhere I think they're down to one gas station and a lot of boarded up buildings unfortunately. I could imagine there's all sorts of trouble you could get into out there.

Great lookin' ride! I'm curious - do your saddle bags deal with the exhaust heat without problems?

Love all the pics, thanks for sharing! I lol'd at the guy advising you not to go that particular way. He obviously has some experience seeking gas and not getting it.

I was concerned about that at first, but it depends on what your cans are made of I hear. My titanium ones don't heat up that much and you can actually touch them at their hottest point.

Awesome ride. I doubt that I'd ever be able to walk or sit again after a trip like that on a sportbike.
