Ipod while riding
Tried it for the first time. Not too sure how I felt about it. I bought my helmet to fit pretty snug and the first thing I noticed was that it took a little effort to just get the buds to stay in my ears while dragging the helmet over them. The snug fit wanted to rip them out of my ears slightly, and then once it was on I couldn't get my fingers up in there to push them in. So I crammed them into my ears and pulled out on the sides of my helmet and gently pulled it over. That worked decently. Messed around getting the ear bud cords NOT hooked under my chinstrap, then I was off. I still heard everything fine, other cars, my motor, but I have to say.. I found it slightly distracting. Maybe it was my "shuffle" choice of music, but I had to remind myself to concentrate on the ride.

All in all.. I am not a big fan. Maybe I will try again sometime with different music.

Interested in hearing other peoples experiences.

PS: Anyone have any suggestions for some good mellow music to ride to? I have heard some good tracks on the background of people's ride videos on youtube.

i used to ride with ear buds in (skullcandy INK'd) loved them. blocked just enough road noise to listen to music at a low volume. so i can still hear whats going on around me. now i have the Scala Rider Q2 that has ipod and FM capabilities along with all there other features. but now i use that with ear plugs to drown out some of the wind noise.

works good.

Yah I also use the skullcandy buds, really comfy. I think my helmet might be a little snug. I was told to by as snug as possible that was comfortable for hours.

Etymotic ER-6's are the BEST riding 'phones.

26db noise reduction (ear plugs) + hi def headphones.

They are about $100 but well worth it if you listen while riding. They also protect against hearing damage because you don't have to crank up the tunes to play over wind noise.

I ride with them EVERYWHERE. Long trip, short trip, and everything in between.

To me the experience can be different depending on the mood and the ride.

I recall one ride where I was in the middle of nowhere doin' about 90 on a long straight stretch. Some Moby came on (don't even like Moby) that made the experience entirely surreal. The world was flying by at a fast pace, while the music was slow and soothing.

Then another time Metallica's Master of Puppets came on right as I was hitting some really tight twisties. Again, amazing.

I had the same problems with earbuds.

So now I am trying a bluetooth helmet and using my Garmin as the MP3 player. It seems to be working better. Got the helmet at the Spokane Cycle Gear. It was on sale and I paid $205.

I was using KOSS earbuds and I can hear better with the bluetooth. No cords to deal with. Also after a long ride my ears were sore from the earbuds.

I am still on my first charge and have about six riding hours in.

The music I like and listen to I found to be distracting..

I might try radiohead, I heard they are relaxing. Only thing I know from them is "Creep" which I like. I don't think I could handle classical, but I might give some techno type stuff a try. I have never listened to techno /shrug

I certainly plan on downloading and trying songs myself.. just wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what worked for them.

Cool helmet. How many songs does your GPS hold? Do you use the bluetooth for anything else?

I am on the same page, no matter how nice the buds.. after so long my ears don't care for it.

Mine too, but if you tough it out, your ear canals get tough and they don't bother you. Mine used to hurt BAD but now everything is cool.

The one and only time I rode with music going, I was commuting to work on a rather high traffic morning. I had just pulled onto the freeway when my music went from a playlist with Red Hot Chili Peppers to one of my hardcore DJ set lists that I'd compiled for my work as a web DJ. There was mixed industrial, metal, hardcore techno and speedcore present. Typically I'm very sedate when commuting, but I quickly found myself lost in the music and ignoring my speed as I ripped through traffic on a packed out 405.

I didn't really have a full understanding of my how hard I was pushing until I glanced at the clock on the gauge cluster to see I'd made my typically 20 minute freeway leg of the commute in only 12 minutes.

I'm typically very mindful of how I ride when around other cars. The notion that I turned into a 100mph+ ballistic squid has kept me from listening to music again while I ride.

Agree, good techno. Crystal Method or Chemical Brothers is also a good choice for some good mainstream techno. You might also try Teddy Bears. EXCELLENT!!!

You can't go wrong with the modern stuff from those bands. And if you want "surreal", try Skinny Puppy

I use Skull Candy buds 95% of the time and do fight with them sometimes, one will come out and flop about...I also have a chatter box. When I use it with the speakers that mount in the helmet, I use swimmers wax to muffle wind and turn the speakers up...works ok.

I have a 2GB SD card in the Garmin for MP3s. I also have the Helmet paired to my iPhone, but haven't used it yet. Basically it will work with anything that is bluetooth.

Blind Pilot is a great new band out of Portland; http://blindpilotmusic.wordpress.com/. Shawn Mullins is good. For older stuff, I like the Eagles, Steve Miller Band, and Pink Floyd.

I listen through an Autocom intercom system. The speakers and microphone come with the system and are installed in my helmet and the passenger helmet. I can talk to my passenger easily without any screaming. I can plug MP3 player, phone and two-way radio into it. It works great. The only distraction is when you try to make changes to playlist or volume while riding. I love riding with music now.

Very interested for both bike to bike and bike to passenger.

Which unit do you use? I would hook up iPhone and hope to chat with my passenger?

That doesn't mean it's not illegal, and with recent ticketing crackdowns you might well get an award!

As I have had 2 pair's of ety's, I can say with certainty they are not the best. Try some custom molded plugs and your ety's will sit on a shelf just like mine, never to be used except as backup.

Not sure, they should be at your local Blockbuster up by the register... we all carry about the same things, we used to carry Sony's for $20 that I had but my kids lost before I had a chance to use them...

I ride with Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones. They fit perfect with a helmet on. They have an inline volume control too. About 1.5 months ago, I bought a wireless remote from Scosche to be used with my iPod Touch. Little plug in on the bottom of the iPod and then I velcro'd the remote on my triple tree. It works sweet... I highly recommend it. All the controls right at your finger tip and buttons are big enough for gloved hands.

I believe there is a thread regarding this in the LEO thread, and I got the impression that it's not illegal in WA, just subject to approval, which is not defined.

For what it's worth.
