The official "NO FREEWAY" thread

Okay using Roseburg as a starting point I'd like to start this thread of rides to "wherever" that you've enjoyed.

One catch-NO FREEWAYS ALLOWED....

No limits on distance or destination,but please,so we can all have the opportunity to enjoy the same ride,post the route you took...

Mods,this may end up needing to be a sticky....

Since a freeway passes through Roseburg.....it's challenging to have an absolutely freeway-free route.

We're planning a ride this summer to Yosemite. We'll be slabbing it on I-5 to GP on the way down and back to hook up with Hwy 199....but riding 2-lane for the rest...over 2500 miles for trip.....Would that count?

My daughter and I took off last summer and did a trip to the Dalles. We ran the freeway just to Roseburg and then went over Diamond Lake to hwy 97. Followed that north to Biggs Junction and then just a little bit on I-84 to the Dalles. The sporty was loaded to the gills and I finally managed to end my habit of two fingered braking. We met some really great people including a tow truck driver. Had a short on the still new to me bike and had to sit in Bend for a bit on the way home. The only butthead on the trip was a guy on a vrod, who parked at a gas station in such a way as to make it really difficult to get my very HEAVY sportster back on the road again. Not only that, but he ignored our presence. Hmmm, so you guys that bitch about cruisers snubbing you, well, some of them just plane snub anyone around them! He was a very extreme exception. Most folks were great, especially since it was a mom and daughter out on an adventure.

Gymbo,that will at the very least get an honorable mention as a "started in GP" ride...Being as this is a Roseburg forum,my idea was to try and have the majority of the rides start in Roseburg...Any way you could get to GP and back on side roads,or is that simply a "time factor" thing?

I didn't notice what area it was in, it was just a title and link on the left side of the page. I just worry that the person not noticing me or my wave, is probably not noticing a few other things.

Time and length of day. Our first day is over 500 miles....429 miles on the last day of the return trip.

I couldn't get your map to work for me, but that sounds like a route that I'd like to try next time I'm there. I've been on a couple of those roads and liked them.

Yep,MPMarty,my G/F,and I did that ride a couple of months ago,that little day park just out of Oakland is pretty cool.I hope someday I have a chance to check it out a bit further...Looks like a really good place to have a PNW BBQ some Sunday in the near future...

The NWCOG group (Northwest Concours Owners Group) holds an annual ride at Kamiah, ID in May called "The Bun Cooler" (Yes it has snowed on us in the past). Although for times sake I slabbed it on the way there, the way back was as follows.

Pendleton, OR Rt 395 south to Mount Vernon, OR
Mount Vernon, OR Rt 26 west to Bend, OR

Roseburg to Havard, Havard to Lookinglass
Lookinglass to Winston & home
605 miles and NO FREEWAYS~!

BTW If anyone is curious and interested in doing a IBA (Iron Butt Association) Oregon In State SS1000 NO FREEWAYS! (1000+ miles within 24 hours within the State bourders AND all without! using the interstates let me know.

I've done several LD (long Distance) rides including a In State Washington SS1000 and much much more! (hehehehehehe!) and the IN State Oregon one has been on my back burner for over a year now.

If anyone is interested in getting their first IBA ride in and this is of interest just drop me a PM.

Essentially the route is as follows:

Winston to CoosBay to Newport through Prineville to Vail Back to Bend to Roseburg to Winston (Via 99) 1036 miles 18 hours (legal speeds riding average 57.6 mph)) with 6 hours of meals/gas stops/rests etc.... as a buffer.

Check out the IBA site and the rules for certification. I'll set up the route, the witnesses and the lesson plan. I jus have to pick a date and depature time. Group will be 6 or less. Gas stops can be as small as 150 mile intervals
if need be. So let me know if you have any interest.

Cascaderider,google "Mildred Kanipe Park",and use the satellite feature,there's a small day-use park there,and no matter which route you use to get there it's a nice ride...

What I had in mind was something like this:

Garden Valley Bl to Fort McKay,138 to Elkton,then on to Yoncalla.There's a side road from Yoncalla that leads to Elkhead Rd at I-5,then take Elkhead Rd to the park.

For the less adventurous-Driver Valley Rd out of Oakland to Elkhead Rd...

Maybe a meet at Sonic early,then ride to the park via a mutually decided route...

All we need is to find people to volunteer to not ride and take the food and drinks...

I'll try to get up there this afternoon and take some pics...

I'm thinking mid-July or sooner...

170 mile range should be do-able as the biggest run between size-able towns is 134 miles with the possibility of gas between them as well. (Bend to Burns).

Calculation of gas is 1036 miles/40mpg(conservative) X $3.00 per gallon (just in case ) = $78.00 Figure two meals $25.00 and any snacks you'll bring $10.00 it'll run under $120.00 for the officiall certified ride of a life time!
(Again, this is being conservative)

Oh and you still have to pay for the certs through the IBA ( but hey you'll be able to say, you've done it AND prove it too!

So far Varment and Speedholes have made contact. I have the route and an "official" IBA witness set up. Any more takers let me know ASAP. The date/time is still up in the air, but most likely early AM in July.

This will not be a boring superslab ride, nor will it be too challenging.
It's your chance to have some guidance on your first 1000 mile in 24 hours or less. (probably a conservative 18-22hrs) very "do-able".

It'll be the first (that I know of) Oregon In-state totaly non-interstate IBA Saddlesore 1000 group ride ever!

I'll have a better idea of my schedule after Tuesday night 6/16 and then we'll post a get-together to iron things out. Again, probably early July as a friend from Washington will be doing this as well and he's involved with another SS1000 late June. I'll keep you and nighthawker in the loop.

How does Saturday July 11th Start and finish in Roseburg sound?
Early AM departure to reduce night/darkness riding.

Lets find a time/date to meet so I can review the route, IBA paperwork and details of my sage (yeah) advice on theses things. Having done nine previous 1000 mile plus rides I've learned a few things that should be helpful. You'll also have the benefit of having another veteran along for the ride as well.
