Possible PNWR BBQ and ride-opinions,please
Okay everybody-Google "Mildred Kanipe Park",and use the satellite map feature, there's a small day-use park there, and no matter which route you use to get there it's a nice ride...

What I had in mind was something like this:

Garden Valley Bl to Fort McKay,138 to Elkton, then on to Yoncalla. There's a side road from Yoncalla that leads to Elkhead Rd at I-5,then take Elkhead Rd to the park.

For the less adventurous-Driver Valley Rd out of Oakland to Elkhead Rd...

Maybe a meet at Sonic early, then ride to the park via a mutually decided route...

All we need is to find people to volunteer to not ride and take the food and drinks...

I'll try to get up there this afternoon and take some pics...

I'm thinking mid-July or sooner...

Any and all thoughts and opinions are welcome, let's make this happen...

Jennifer,I only got a passing glance as I rode by,and that was several months ago,is the day-use area suitable for something like what I'm suggesting?

it is spectacular!! is quiet but for all the peacocks. it is a historical site with trails and a creek and plenty of space. its got bbq deals to use(though id use my own first, maybe you guys would use them, idk) and if you horse at all, there is a whole other equestrian side.. it is an incredible park and any which way yuou get there is a good way to go. 5 stars

27th is corset cruise in Medford, and not all the women are as fluffy as I am, some of you guys should come down. The 28th would be ok, can it be a dinner BBQ? If it's to be lunch, I have to make arrangements for the little old man in a wheelchair I pick up for church.

This sounds like a GREAT idea! eseeray, I think weekends are best for the majority of the group-- but I understand your position.

Are we thinking this is a family thing, or just our immediate group?

Got some pics today,Marty and I rode up there...

Man,the word is peaceful...except for the blood-curdling peacock screeches...

Sorry for the "blurrys",new camera and I had it set for Macro...Oh well, live and learn...

All in all,beautiful park,lots of room,lots of shade,nice bathrooms...It'll work perfectly for a BBQ...

The views from the road above:

Various pics of the park area:

Finally, the view from the entrance as we were leaving:

The 26th sounds like a workable date...

As to the food, first let's get a headcount, then decide...My original thought was burgers and dogs, and have every household bring a side dish,or chips and dip,or just something edible...If everybody threw in a $5 bill, there would be enough for meat, buns, fixings, some sodas and some bottled water to boot...Figure with 10 people, that's $50...Around $20-$25 total for burger patties, hot dogs, buns,an onion, and some cheap mustard and ketchup, maybe even relish too...The rest of the money can go to sodas, water, and ice...Paper plates and plastic forks are cheap...

Okay, here's how I see it happening.

Everybody meet somewhere, around 9:30 or 10 AM,Sonic works,if for no other reason that everyone knows where it is...

We need 1 volunteer, preferably someone with a pickup,to take a BBQ,ice chests and filling, and other various stuff directly to the park.

Then, all the people on bikes leave, going on a ride of about 2-1/2 to 3 hours, with Kanipe Park being the destination...

The route I have in mind is Garden Valley Road to Melqua to Ft Mckay to 138 to Elkton, then 38 through Yoncalla to Scotts Valley Road to Elkhead Rd to the park...

Sorry,I'm a little short on commas so I had to conserve...

Perhaps a different starting point/time would be in order so we can have breakfast without spoiling our appetite for the BBQ??

Okay, that's how I see it happening, any ideas are welcome...

LOL. Regarding what you can bring, as long as we go with Kirk's idea here:

"As to the food, first let's get a headcount, then decide...My original thought was burgers and dogs, and have every household bring a side dish,or chips and dip,or just something edible...If everybody threw in a $5 bill, there would be enough for meat, buns, fixings, some sodas and some bottled water to boot...Figure with 10 people, that's $50...Around $20-$25 total for burger patties, hot dogs, buns,an onion, and some cheap mustard and ketchup, maybe even relish too...The rest of the money can go to sodas, water, and ice...Paper plates and plastic forks are cheap..."

... then just a side dish, chips and dip, cookies, something like that.. Hope to see you there.

Okay,I'll bring this back to the top one ore time...

I need a list of people that will commit to this picnic thing,$5 per person should buy enough meat, sodas, etc for everybody that attends...

But,I need to make a list of people that will commit to it,so let's get it going...

2 things-If you commit and don't show, you're still obligated for the $5,because it will be spent in your name...

If you don't commit and show anyway, you better have your own food,as the food money will already be spent, and I will plan on maximizing the quality and amount you get for your $5,so there will be no "extra" food...

If you cannot agree to these 2 things up front, then don't participate...

Sorry for the hard-ass attitude about it,but I have been burned before by no-shows and people that show up expecting to just decide at the last minute then pay at the door or get a freebie...

Cindy and I are in,and I'll bring either Potato or Macaroni salad...Who's next??

My wife and I are in, she'll bring a propane BBQ and an Ice chest full of ice. If 5 bucks a piece will cover everything else we're good with that.
