Looking for some Local help.
May son and I are planing a trip from Eugene to Northern Calif (Hwy 96) and we are looking for routes from the Roseburg area to the coast. Was looking at the Powers (542) to Gold Beach route but not sure if it's paved or not. Another route we were looking at was Powers to Cow Creek to Glendale then to Grants Pass and 199 over to the coast. Any info would be appreciated as would any other routes, thanks.

I'd just take Hwy 42 from Winston to Coquille, the 42 S to Bandon and 101 south from there. Hwy 42 is a great ride and 42S rates as a hidden gem, short but giggle fun.

The trip through Grants Pass is a good one You drop into the giant Redwoods when you hit California.

You could also take Territorial from Eugene to Drain then 138 from there to the coast or loop back to Roseburg on Tyee access road to Umpqua.

If the later route then head over to Lookingglass and on over to 42 and to the coast.

All the later routes avoid I-5

If you want to go on to cow creek and to Glendale all you need to do is from lookingglass head back to Winston and then head to dillard and on to Riddle where you can hit Cow Creek road to Glendale then hop on the interstate to Grants Pass and on over.

Just outside of Obrion just before the Cali border there is a Motorcycle camp ground called Spark Plugs if you wanted to do some camping on the way.

What are you riding? If they are dual sports there are routes from the Cave Junction, OR area to Happy Camp, CA and hwy 96. If both are road bikes them there are other alternatives.

The powers to gold beach has a gravel section at the top of the mountain if you stay on the main road its about 10 miles worth, if you turn left at the top of the mountain its a switch back gravel road that I just shut the engine off and coast down for maybe 4 miles before you hit pavement. The powers to cow creek is the one I believe is eden valley, its paved all the way however to me its more of a supermoto road, as its narrow with no lines, and few markers and the pavement is that really rough chip seal.
The road to Powers is very fun. Myrtle Point to Bandon on Lampa mountain is very fun. If you go thru Langlois, go up Langlois Mt, road for maybe 5 miles then turn around (its a dead end anyway, narrows up and turns to chip seal further up) best twisties in the area. Give me a holler if youre coming thru I might join you for a few twisties.

How do you want to drop down into 96? Do you want to go the Takilma/Happy Camp route?

Thats a fun route did that last year but was coming north, looked like it would be more fun going south if you dont know the road, as it was all down hill with blind corners on the northern part. Brakes got a little toasty.

Thanks for the info on those two routes, and I will let you know if we go through that area.

Thanks, got it, but some of the route info is a year or two old and nothing is better then local riders that have ridden those roads.

Not sure yet but am looking at going down the coast to Hwy 299(Tyee City) to Hwy 96 and follow that all the way to I-5. I-5 to Ashland to Hwy 66, 140, 62 to Crater Lake then 138 back to Eugene.

Lee, that sounds like a whole lot of fun. Take lots of pictures. I plan to hit 96 some time this summer or fall.. I've heard lots about it but I've never ridden any further south than Ashland.

We did this route 2 yrs ago: Over thru Powers, then on to Gold Beach, slabbed it down to Eureka spent the night, then 299 to 199 thru Happy Camp. The coasties then went west the inland guys went east.

3 yrs ago the Sutherlin guys came thru Myrtle Point over Lampa to Bandon, quick run up Langlois, cut over on 199, spent the night in Medford. Went up Dead Indian and all that to Crater Lake and back 138.
Both were two day rides. There was a bit too much droning on straights like going to Crater and down to Eureka, but that kinda goes with longer rides.

62 out of ashland is the greensprings wagon trail and it takes you to K-Falls
Dead Indian dumps out on 140 near the cutoff to got to the south entrance of Crater Lake through Fort Klamath.
