buy, beg, borrow or steal waterproof and or heated apparel
got my 2000plus mile ride comming up and im short the funds to go and buy waterproof and or heated gear. i have heated leather gloves but they are not waterproof. im covered in the pants department but all i have are leather jakets and boots and are water proof for more than going to work and back.

i have some nice like new harley leather jackets id be willing to sell, trade, or hold as colateral.

anyone have anything? or suggestions for functional cheap alternatives?

Frogg Toggs are fairly inexpensive and will get the job done. They definitely don't last forever, but should at least get you through a season or two with moderate use (meaning they should work great for your trip). You can often find them on sale if you look around. They are often available from outdoor stores as well as motorcycle shops.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your trip.

Ok,...I managed to get my hans on a waterproof jacket, a heated jacket liner and some water proof boots and gloves.

What should I wear under it all? I was just thinking thermals and my regular clothes.

For a 2K mile trip, I'd seriously consider either some decent underwear: http://www.ldcomfort.com/

Or, a less expensive route:
http://www.antimonkeybutt.com/

Maybe check out some Iron Butt or Saddle Sore forums for additional gear pointers?
Hope you have a great trip, love to see the ride report when you're done.

When I ride long distance I wear Under Armor, long johns, or sweats under my riding gear, things like pockets and seams get uncomfortable to sit on after a while. After I get where I'm going to stop for the night I then change into my street clothes.

If you don't have enough cash standing by for gear, will you have enough standing by for an emergency? Possibly a tow truck or shop fees half way through the trip? Just something to think about...

If we thought about every contingency related to a motorcycle trip, I doubt we would ever take one.. The older we get, the more we think, the less we do. I say go for it & worry about contingencies as they arise.

Who is this "we" you speak of? I do as many well thought out and planed epic adventures as I can afford ever year. Usually that's 3 or 4, week long adventures. Of course being off pavement rides, I need to be better prepared, calling the wife to come and get me isn't as easy telling her what freeway off ramp I'm at. The 6 "P's" as I learned in them: Proper Planing Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Oh and I'm a youngster at 55 years old and hope I never get too old to plan and implement a moto adventure.

I got cash for the trip an nessecities. I got a credit card I'm saving just for emergacys. I'm just after pricing out water proof gear it was more expensive than the trip will be. So I'm jus looking into other cost effective means. I think I've got everything rounded out to keep me dry. I need to figure out how I'm gonna pack everything on the bike and how to keep that stuff dry.

2 sided Velcro in a long roll from Ace or Lowes, wrapped around itself, then when you need to adjust whatever you are carrying, cut to length, or just keep wrapping around.

Can you UPS any bulky stuff ahead to your destination?

The problem I found with using trash bags was no matter what I did to secure, they always start flapping, and eventually tear and leak. (Got caught in a huge storm leaving Louisville a few years ago.)

i've got a 2pc black/black aerostich suit that i used to commute in that i've just got sitting around you can borrow.. i'm 5'-9" and 155lbs - it'll fit up to 3-4 inches taller and about 20-30lbs heavier and still have room for undercoats/warm layers..

it's a bit rough around the edges, as i put aprox 75k miles on it, but it still has all it's pads, zips together, back protector, etc. i'm up in bothell/mill creek.

on the Frogg Toggs. I got a set to ride to Arkansas (left on the 10th of October) and they were really good to keep me dry through WA, ID, and MT.

As to the underwear department I bought a pair of bicycle shorts, used plenty of powder, showered every day. I wore a long underwear shirt, a fleece vest and the shorts, then the lined protective gear, then the Frogg Toggs. I was a little cold over the rockies, but burned to a soggy mush when the weather got above 70.

Have a good trip!
