Buying parts, Local or Mail order?
Hey gang. I'm looking for some ideas on where to buy hard parts for my r6.
Things like chain, sprokets and brakes. Stuff like that. I buy mail order for my jeep all the time, but only a few parts for bikes.
Your input would be very helpful.
thanks.

Make sure you buy a chain breaker tool and some extra pins for it... Chains usually only come in 110 or 120 links, and you'll have to break it depending on how many links you'll need.

check out www.Ridersdiscount.com www.motomummy.com or www.sportbiketrackgear.com

I've bought all my tires from Motorcycle Superstore, after shopping local prices. I would rather buy local and support our local economy. For a few bucks more i'll order with local places but when it comes to the bigger ticket items, if the local shops cant get me close, i'll mail order. I use shops in town for what labor i dont feel comfortable doing myself. I've had a tire swapped at Absolute Motosports and had a good experience with them. Neider is a real good guy. Bought my current bike and some of my riding gear from Hobi's, also happy with them. One of their service techs was nice enough to point out what type of chain lube that they use in the shop and offered a few tips. I've had my last 4 tires swapped out by Logtown Choppers. I've built a good rapport with the shops i use often and enjoy talking with the people there. So, shop and buy local as often as you can. Its a good way to support the local Bike Nites and rides too.

I try to support local shops.

I use almost all of the shops in the seattle area and I have had good luck.

Lots of times I do my research online, get pricing and then deal with a local.
They usually meet the price.
I usually know more about the specifics of what I want etc, but I don't hold that against the shop parts guys/gals.
They have a gazillion bikes with a gazillion parts to deal with.
I school them on my needs and off we go.

I like having a face and a name.
It has helped me get stuff done more than once.

In the larger markets (like Seattle) that's more possible to do. At this time, the only dealership we have in Douglas County is Kawasaki. If you have something other than this, you have to either go to one of the handful of motorsports shops who will order after-market stuff from catalogs or order it from the internet. Yeah, its great to support local businesses and have a real person to deal with, but some of those catalogs can be ordered from by the general public. So, then, why pay a middle-man to do something you can do yourself?

At least for Hardley's there are three different shops that can get parts and or do work on the bike. For once, I'm riding the brand with the most support in the rural area in which I choose to live. When I had my Ducati, that wasn't the case at all.

I bought the exhaust from Big River Cycle who ordered it from the Drag Specialties catalog.. they gave me 10% off the DS msrp. So even on catalog items sometimes a local guy can get you a deal...

Ooops, make that four shops. How did they make any profit by giving you the discount? I keep forgetting about them, since they're still a bit new and usually closed when I go by. Maybe I need to do that earlier?

Usually, the legit shops get a discount when ordering from the catalog that you will not get.

The catalog company makes deals with the local dealers. If you order the part from the catalog you pay retail cost, lets say $100.00 If the dealer orders it from the catalog company, they pay say $70.00 and sell it to you for $100.00 making them $30.00

If you can, support the local shop. That is if they are pleasant and helpfull.

Absolute Motorsports in Roseburg has been fine for some stuff and I do like their attitude, but they are not a road riders shop. Living in podunk Oregon has its merits, but shopping for bike parts and accessories isn't one of them. I try to buy local, but unfortunately I have not been able to get much satisfaction. When in need or having the occassional loose buck web based purchases have been my "M.O." most of the time.

I can't buy helmets or leathers online, wacky sizes. Even locally I've had trouble. I should where a XL helmet, but go to wal-mart and try on chinese helmets, I can't even get the XL over my head. Weant one place looking for chaps 3XL wouldn't even fit over my leg, went to the now defunkt Barts in the mall told her I must need 4XL she says no way I can tell by looking at you you're an XL, sure enough their XL fits. Then I tried on leather jackets at Loves truck stop, took a freakin 3XL (didn't buy it though). Between the chinese helmets and pakistanny leather the sizes are CRAZY!
I won't wear chinese boot anymore! I found that I am an American 12 (at walmart I couldn't even find shoes big enough) I now mail order American made military boots. I've got Corcoran jump boots, Altama combat boots and now I just got Converse combat/tactical boots (berry compliant/made in USA) when I opened the box and saw a great big american flag on each boot it really made me proud.
