Matt,

I’m in. I’ll meet you tonight (Thursday May 29th) at the 12th Street Circle K at 6:30pm for a ride.

I’ll post a separate thread to help get the word out and send out a few PM’s so everyone will have the opportunity to join us.

My thoughts are with you buddy.

We left Circle K with 6 of us riding and cruised out the south side of town. Following SixFive we cruised at a steady pace through the countryside towards Aumsville. Group was SixFive, OneTrack, Bing, ME, Alcorn and Surety. As we approached a 25 mph S curve I noticed a little sand in the first turn and slowed. We all did. Evidently not enough though. As I approached the second turn I saw a ton of sparks flying and slowed quickly and waved those behind that there was trouble. As I got closer my thought of a crash was confirmed. Bing was flat out sliding and his bike was just tipping into that 8' ditch. Luckily, Bing did not follow the bike into the ditch. We all stopped and those ahead returned. A gentleman in an 18 wheeler stopped to check on everyone and mentioned that a neighbor down the road might have equipment to help get the bike out of the ditch and surety cruised to see if they could help us. As he was gone the farmer from where we were located showed up to see if everyone was OK. He said that a Harley ride had crashed last year in that ditch but he ended up in the ditch and the bike had come down on top of him, killing the rider. My prayers go out to this rider and I thank god that this was not the case for Bing. He then went and got his tractor, a friend and a tow rope and helped to pull the bike out of the ditch. In the mean time Bing had called his cousin with a truck to come get the bike. With the bike out the farmer went and got bing some water and ice (great guy). As we waited Surety and SixFive went to either end of the roads to keep a lookout for the truck and the rest of us assessed the damage and chatted about the incident. Cousin showed up and we all helped load the bike into the truck. With the truck loaded and saddle bing was taken to the hospital and the rest of us decided to call it a day. We all rode back into town at a gingerly pace. Bing had called me later on while I was cleaning the mud from my gear and said he was awaiting the results of some x-rays. And well you know the rest...

I want to thank everyone for all the help and I appreciate the comraderee of my fellow riders. We here at PNWR in my opinion are a tight nit family. My thoughts are with u Jim and we will get you back on the rode in no time, Don't you worry about that.

TY Matt - and all the rest. I will have a BBQ here when I can use my hand to pay you all back for the help, and I really feel bad for causing so much trouble. If I was railing the corner I would really feel bad.....this was just a freak deal - it wasn't winter sand - more like beach sand, and I wasn't pushing the envelope.

Jim...

Heal quickly. I can't believe you slid out. Beach sand???

I'll be the shallow one... How's the bike? and ummm how did the wife take it? Mad or sad?

If you get bored, call me. We can swap coaching and shop time for manual labor, or just hang out.

coaching = read the shop guide, give pointers and drink a beer.

shop time = your place (cause it's just clean and pretty)

manual labor = anything from mowing to heavy lifting. I'll even help you wrench on your bike.

Wife was a little POed but is better today. Here is what a swamp bike looks like;

It won't turn to the right - bent forks is my guess. Nothing $500 can't fix. Dam - GPS and BFN Digital camera- soaked.

TODD

It was the tires - I already warned King Ogre - same tires: NFG in sand!

lol

May be a rumor.......Michelin is bringing out there new sand road compound for 2009. Keep it on the down low....

In no way do I intend to diminish the extend to your injuries but I am truly thankful you weren't hurt more severely!
Regardless of the outcome, it was a pleasure meeting you all and I hope we'll get together and ride some other time . . .

Through cloudy skies gray light fell upon us as we hurdled corner-to-corner at a 6/10ths pace. Unlike so many rides before, Jim was not leading as we followed Massimo on his Aprilia factory special RSVR and Onetrack on his intoxicatingly sensual 848. Our two leaders were keeping the pace relatively sedate, obviously peeling one eye in their mirrors, making sure I was not left too far behind as I followed the other five riders like a bungee cord attached anchor.

Into a 90 degree right-hander I downshifted under hard breaking and felt my rear tire serpentine as it searched for grip along the gritty surface of the farm road which we were riding. As I exited and shot towards the next 90 degree corner, a left-hander on the edge of the smelliest sheep farm in Marion county, I saw Matt hard on his brakes with hand out to slow both me and Alcorn69. As the corner opened up into a granular nightmare I witnesses Jim pulling himself up from the ground, knee puck hanging off one leg of his riding pants, scrapes on 20% of his gear, including his face shield and quiet curses tumbling from his mouth. We dismounted and asked Jim if he was ok, which was answered (no surprise, if you know Jim) with a resounding, “I’m fine, no problems” and he jumped down into the ditch to retrieve his bike.

Slugging down the slick embankment and into a foot of water Jim hoisted mightily on his bike – which moved convincingly under his strain – before dropping it back down and muttering something about his wrist, “might be sprained . . .”. He crawled back out and we began the bike salvage operation as various body parts began to swell and bruise on Jim. And then the pain seeped in. It was beginning to hurt just to look at him.

The remainder is history. Jim The Intrepid is out for a spell and will be sorely missed by the rest of us.

Thanks to all for the offers and thoughts. It was great meeting you and Alcorn too, and next time maybe we can finish the ride! We didn't get home from the hospital until 1:30, so I am a little beat. I probably won't start on the bike for a while, since I will be in a cast or whatever (the orthopod) decides for 6 weeks.

I have some pics in my phone and am waiting for the software to retrieve them.

Jim - I'll attempt to text you a couple photos I took at the scene. I particularly like the one of you asphalt bodysurfing - nice sparks!

NP J - other than the inconvenience of using a hand that won't listen to directions I'm getting along ok. Also it was late when we cleared the scene (I got home at 1 am).
