TILT Custom Motorcycle Leathers...
I'm making this thread as a followup to the PNWriders Group buy I set up earlier this year. Who Wants Leathers??? (one or two piece, custom fit)

the suits are now trickleing in

so I'd like anyone who ordered a suit to please post pics and a review of the product.

here's 30 pages of reviews from the Bay Area Rider's Forum "BARF" in California:

I got the 3894 suit, in matt black and gunmetal. I haven't riden in it yet, but the other night I spent a few hours in it sitting around the house, just to get the feel of it. It was actually pretty comfortable, and the fit seems spot on.

TILT review
Alright, so ill update this post as i find out more

first impression: got the suit at work and have been wearing it around the office, its a one piece, so getting in was different, and well, its still tight, the leather needs a good break in, unlike most store bought leather, this stuff is stiff out of the box! everything is as specified, anything i thought might end up tight or a tad long ..... did..... so yeah..... but tight spots are stretching out, a few have already gone away! the mesh liner feels very nice, no problems there!

so after a few short rides (less then 50 miles) and some time around the house and office, the knees are still tight! not as tight as when i first put them on, but they are still very tight (its hard to get my leg over the bike) im hoping the more i wear them the more it will loosen up. the arms and legs (minus the knees) also fit great! still stiff, but no stinging spots!

Back protector: haven't tried it out, doesn't look as fancy or stiff etc... as other back protectors, but for the price, its worth it, i think it will work well for the street, (less then 75mph ish) but for hardcore street and track, i would suggest saving up a tad, and getting a nicer one.

after riding with it, its pretty dang comfy! the chest straps got twisted up and didn't feel so nice, but it only happens when your putting it on, so my fault for not fixing it. the suit fits perfect with it and the CE back Armour, or you can take them both out and use something nicer, my alpine star is to snug to have anything in the pockets.

ill add more as i know more

TILT the company: Great GREAT GREAT guy to do business with, was very helpful in all my emails, regarding measuring, price, options, types leather, YOU NAME IT! the guy knows customer service! sure the replies weren't instant, but not a who lot longer! billing and shipping were top notch and well. cant complain at all! i will be getting my next suit from TILT!

Suggestions for next time or others:

get measured by someone who knows what they are doing, and/ OR have some gear on hand so you can pick where things like the neck, wrists and ankles should end,

ill add picks when i get home!

-Levi

P.s. i also want to thank Daniel of TILT for getting me such an awesome product!

I got home from a meeting in seattle (and a nice ride home) around 2:30 in the afternoon, was gonna go in thru my garage, then decided to look at teh front door..... what do you know,
there's a box sitting there

not having much time to screw around (as we had a bike ride scheduled at 3pm)
I ripped open the box,
took a quick glance at the front and back.
then hopped right in (well, not really "hopped right in")
I decided to try them on without unzipping the jacket from the pants, this was a mistake

got the pants on, right arm in, and when trying to get my left arm in, the shoulder armor got all twisted and started poking me in the spine

after a little fighting I got myself squeezed into them, and all zipped up
a little snug (not quite binding) in a few areas,

I then hopped on the bike,
got gas,
met up with the other riders,
and went for an awesome ride.

broke in the leathers over the next 6 hour
most of the snug spots of concern worked themselves out quickly,

overall fit,
they are a little "snug"
just about everywhere, part of that I'm sure is that they are new.
and I'm not used to wearing leathers (they're not supposed to be "Baggy)
I had my measurements done at "Men's Wearhouse"
and am pretty happy at how custom mine fit my (oddly shaped) body

wearing leathers is definately a different feeling
overall I think it helps my feeling of confidence when riding (knowing I'm more protected)

I'd definately reccomend these to anyone who's wanting to get some decent gear.

I Ride: better than him^^some day
I LOVE the look of mine and it seems to be a quality suit, but unfortunately I am not impressed with the fit. I will try them out this week eend and see how they do on the bike. If they do not perform well I will be forced to make major changes in the torso area or just not wear them.

I am not blaming Daniel/Tilt. It is clearly a measurement issue (I hope) but when you roll the dice this is what could happen. I even got measured by a seamstress and double checked them myself. Not sure what happened.

I like mine. My suit is also little snug, but better than loose. Could have been my measurements. I am very happy this buy.

#3890, 1-piece in black/gunmetal/white, gloss leather, no speed hump, perforated front

Cobra,

I'm really sorry to hear about your fittment issues.

I can only suggest rubbing the suit down with Lexol http://www.lexol.com/lexol.html
and wear it (as much as you can stand)

Today I did another 200+ miles (nothing really big at one strait stretch)
it's definately loosening up (becoming much more comfortable)

Good Luck

I'm wearing it as I type this - might as well start the break-in asap.
It's an all black, full perforated 2-piece.

*If y'all know anything about me by now you should understand that I'm fairly pragmatic, preferring function over form, and analytical about details, construction etc.

So here goes:

*My basis for comparison is a full custom Syed suit that I had made a few years back. I had to sell it to make ends meet about a year ago.
I also had a Hein Gericke racing suit when I was in Germany, more than 20 years ago.
I've long forgotten the details of the Hein Gericke other than it was well made and sturdy (not to mention fashionable red & white), holding up to a number of "track tests" at Nurburgring Nordschleife and Spa Francorchamps on a couple of RZ350s I was flogging at the time.

Initial impressions:

Very sturdy feeling leather. Appears thick and sturdy, and although somewhat stiff, also seems supple and gives every impression that it will hold up very well in a crash, but will also break-in nicely.
I admit that I had some concern about the quality of the leather - no longer.
The leather (at least outwardly) seems very comparable to the Syed, even better in a few spots where the Syed used lighter gauge presumably for comfort.
I prefer sturdy for protection - comfort will come with use and break-in.

I'm going to treat the entire suit to a few treatments of Lexol just to help the break-in and assure suppleness and abrasion resistance.

The stretch material (actual Keprotec?) seems very stout.
Should last a while without losing shape, and likely to hold up well to abrasion (as well as this stuff could, at least).
This stuff is MUCH more impressive than the material used in my Syed.

Large and very sturdy genuine YKK zippers throughout. Each zipper sized appropriately for each location and likely stress.

Leather wind/comfort flaps inside the wirst and ankle zippers.

Good leather & velcro (OK, "hook & loop") zipper closures/keepers at the neck and wrists.

ALL seams appear to be double (triple? - whatever the best type is) stitched (from what I can tell) with sturdy thread and an appropriately sized stitch for each location.

All stitching is even, straight, and nicely finished with no loose threads anywhere on the garment.

Sturdy fabric wind flap inside the main jacket zipper, and other appropriate location.

Full (FULL!) mesh liner - down to the ankles and wrists.

Soft padded roll for the back of the neck - no concerns about abrasion/itching/"hot spots" in this critical spot.
Nice detail! Very well thought out!

A very wide and sturdy waist band of thick stretchy material.

The ankle ends are finished with a roll of leather, rather than simply cut like many race suits.
Not sure how critical this is, but it's a nice touch and shows attention to detail.

The wrists, on the other hand (pun intended! ) are finished with a seperate piece of roll leather stitched on, rather than simply rolled over and stitched like the ankles.
This is a very nice touch and should aid comfort in this critical spot.

All armor/padding removable through well located and generously sized accesses with good "hook & loop" closure.

Armor/padding pockets well sized to keep things in the correct location(s) for maximum protection.

The hip padding is much more sturdy than the Syed pieces, and much longer extending to the back of the leg and part of the hamstring.

*Notably absent...
NO tail bone or butt padding.
The Syed had these...
I did not order the hard spine protector as I am a bit older and mellower now and envision this suit as a very well equipped sport-touring suit.
Perhaps the hard spine protector extends down enough to protect the tailbone?

The jacket has two inside pockets - Just enough for license/registration/ATM card, house keys and small camera - all you need!!

Every single detail that I look at is well constructed and nicely finished.
Every single material seems to be very sturdy and of the highest quality (& I'm fairly demanding of such things).
It seems nothing has escaped attention - just how I'd do it (& that's very high praise indeed coming from me!).

The Fit:

In a word? *ahem* Snug *ahem*

My measurements, what can I say?!
At least i won't have to deal with flappy leather when riding.

The jacket-to-pant connection seems to ride a bit high, but this is my first 2-piece suit so maybe it's correct and I just have to get used to it.

The thighs are a bit snug (I have very stout quads from body-building and racing bicycles when I was younger), but in time I expect they'll stretch a bit and give a little more freedom.

Speaking of freedom, the entire crotch area is perfect.
I'm short, and have had to contend with pants crotches hanging halfway to my knees.
The Syed's crotch hung a bit low.

The waist/belly/love-handles circumference is perfect.
Couldn't have asked for better.
I was a bit worried about this area...

The sleeves seem a little long for my tastes.
There should not be much risk of exposed flesh at the wrists, and will allow short gauntlet gloves.
Better too long than too short - If it really bothers me later I can have Miriam take in the sleeves just a bit - cheap & easy fix.
The elbow armor rides a bit low on the arm, but we'll see how it is when broken-in - Things just may wind up just right. Time will tell.
Again, I provided the measurements, so it's impossible to tell who's to blame.
Nevertheless, not a big deal.

With my Syed suit the ankles came up a bit short "for racing boots".
Well, some boots are taller than others, some are shorter.
I adjusted my measurement from the knee to the ankle bone, adding 20mm, and I'm glad I did.
This length is perfect; stopping about 1/2" above the bone so it's as long as can be and still be comfortable without interfering with the bone and getting in the way.
The knee armor and pucks are perfectly placed.

I also noticed that the shin guard seems a little shorter than typical, but in my case that's a good thing.
With my short legs, using standard knee/shin armor, the shin armor actually extends well into the boot causing fit problems and difficulty securing the boot properly.
With these, the armor stops just barely inside the soft lip at the top of the boot. Maximum protection and no fit issues. Perfect.

I can't believe that the fit would have been any better if I had been standing in Tilt's "showroom" (sweat shop??) and been measured by them in person.

That's about all I can think of right now.
The suit is already starting to fit better just wearing it for a while.

Overall, I'm impressed.
I honestly wasn't sure what to expect.
I'm definitely not an off-the-rack fit, and my budget is limited, so I really didn't have much choice.
Any leather is better than any textile, but these seem very well made and give every indication of being able to do their job very well.
They seem very comparable to the Syed suit, even better in a few places, at about 1/3rd the price...

Thanks Daniel and Russ - Nice. Very Nice!

ps - I'll post up a few pics soon!

First off I love my suit. I went with a custom 2 piece.

Initial ride there seemed to be some tight spots here and there but overall fit was really good. The more time I spend in it the better it feels. I have a feeling that with another solid weekend of riding and some Lexol it will be perfect.

Even though the suit has a full mesh liner I found that riding with some light thermal silk pants and shirt on underneath the suit helped with some of the tight spots. The elbows and knees esp.

Thanks Daniel. I love the suit and would not hesitate to buy a TILT suit again.

Thanks for the suggestion Russ. But it's not a "tight" issue, it's a "not properly fitting" issue.

I have contacted Daniel about possible options to fix it.

Im seriously considering Tilt as an alternative to a non fitted dianese or (I wish) RS Taichii suit. From the look of some of these review photos, if I go the way of TILT Im gonna ask Daniel to sow a sock into the crotch area. For street cred.

My suit came on Tuesday. Damn, it looks good, in my opinion. Which is the opinion I care about most. I'll try to motivate & post some pics this weekend. Wednesday I went for a ride around Lake Roeseger to see how it felt. It is a snug fit, but not too tight. It does seem to break in quick, as I only went on a 50 mile ride & there was a noticable difference afterwards. I plan on rubbing it down with Lexol this weekend. I like the full lining, but did wear thin thermal underwear underneath. I think it was more comfortable that way. If the weather is decent, I'm going to try & get over the pass to Leavenworth Saturday. I'll post a further review afterwards. Perhaps even a crash review if the ride goes bad, but hopefully not. Shit, it's nice & sunny right now. I think I'll bail out of work early & maybe head up 2 to the top of the pass. Have a fun afternoon at work, class, or whatever....

Thanks for the suit Daniel, & Russ for organizing this buy.

I hate to put a stain on all these good reviews but I'm rather dissapointed in my suit. As far as I can tell it's a good quality suit, but they messed up and sent the order without my color changes. I said it was no big deal it's still a leather suit, and that's what I keep trying to tell myself, but the more I think about it the more bummed I am that I spent so much on something I don't really want to wear. After all this I probably wouldn't buy another tilt.

No no, I meant the color changes I made as apposed to the origional colors shown in the catalog. I said it was no big deal that they made a mistake.

This was what I sent when I placed my order

and this is what I got

It's not a whole lot different which is why I said it was no big deal, but I don't really like all the white.

Yeah I emailed him. He said the order he sent to the manufacturer had no color changes, so they made it with the colors that are shown in the catalog. He said he would look into it, but I'm not really expecting anything to come from it. It's not like I can return it and they can pull the correct one from the shelf, you know.
