My new project bike is a 1963 (ish) Honda 305 Superhawk. I picked it up several weeks ago from my uncle after it had been sitting in his garage since around 1973. Story goes that he put it away after the kick starter jammed on him. Not sure what exactly is wrong with it.

The pictures don't do it justice, it's in a lot worse shape than it looks. But it's all there and I don't think it will take a lot of money to get it running and reasonably road worthy. The gas tank was dry and there wasn't any ugly stuff in it so I think my uncle drained it at some point. I would assume the carbs are probably dry also.

My plan at this point is to get it running and road worthy. Over the years I'd like to just tinker with it and slowly clean it up and restore it. It'll need many hours of cleaning and a new paint job. My uncle's rattle can job isn't going to cut it.

  2. It looks so out of place next to the other 3!

Not a bad find at all! And I think you're right about it not costing too much to get her up to par, the tires for those old bikes can be had for under $100 a pair, under $80 a pair if you shop around, and those old motors are simplistic at the least, as long as it kicks over and has compression, it should be pretty easy to get it running!

Good luck and hope to see pics of it in motion soon!

  3. Looks like a fun project!

  5. Classic find!!!!!!

You may want to look for new old stock parts (NOS) at www.bike bandit.com
Large selection for these old beauties.

We would not have today's bikes if it were not for these progressive specimens back in their time.

Thanks for the info on the tires. I was worried I'd be spending a bunch of money on tires.

  7. Very cool!:mfclap:

  8. Looks a lot better than the Bridgestone I have.

    Great find. Keep us posted.

are all good places to pick up parts for these bikes. I've also picked up a few things at lake city power sports. They have some old stock and have been able to order a few things, too.

Pulled the cover off that's near the kick starter, a broken piece fell out. I pulled the electric starter off and the chain and stuff was fine. I ended up putting the bike in second gear and pushed the bike and it turned over.

I need to see what that piece was for. So far I don't see where it could possibly go.

Carbs are clean, engine turns over. Just need to buy some new fuel lines, a cotter pin and then a battery and it should start.

    How cool!!

There is nothing like hearing an old engine like that fire up after so many years...

Good luck on the restoration project! Keep us posted!

  19. Very cool! Love the tank on that...

  20. Word of advice: Keep the plate.

You can register it as a Collector Vehicle, use that plate to do it, and never pay another tab fee again!
