2012 Fall Beginners Ride to Baker City

Discussion in 'Central' started by MCRIDER007, Aug 1, 2012.

  1. Last April we had a Spring Ride to Kamiah, ID to kick off the 2012 riding season and this year's Fall ride will be to Baker City, Oregon on Saturday, September 15.

Baker City is one of our favorite riding destinations. It is a historic town in east central Oregon and pretty easy to get to from the Tri-Cities, one option is to get on the freeway and follow the signs south, another option is to take the long way through the mountains on some of the best motorcycling roads in the Northwest.

There are several "long" ways to get to Baker City, most are about 220-250 miles and will take 5-7 hours depending on speed and stops. This is again advertised as a "Beginners" ride but it is actually a ride for everyone. We will have a beginners group that will be tailored to meet beginner rider's needs....slower speeds and more frequent stops. Experienced riders can make their own groups and plan their own routes. Anyone not wanting to ride in a group can just show up at the motel and take advantage of our group rates.

Our hosts at Baker City will be the Oregon Trail Motel located at 211 Bridge Street. It is an older but very biker friendly motel and a short walking distance to downtown. Our group rates (including tax) for this event are $38 for a single and $49 for double beds. You are responsible for making (and canceling) your reservation, just call the Oregon Trail at 541-523-5844 and tell them you are part of "Steve's Ride".

The Beginner's Group will leave the Clearwater Starbucks' parking lot at 9:00 AM on September 15. Please post in this thread or send me a PM if you are a beginner or would prefer to ride in the Beginner's group so I can ensure that we have enough experienced riders to mentor each beginner on a one to one basis.

See you in Baker City on the 15th.

  2. This sounds like fun. I'll have to let you know closer to that time if the stars will align for me to go (ie I still have a bike or one to ride, I have a job to pay for this trip, etc.) I sure could use a weekend away though and the Kamiah trip was TONS of fun!!!

  3. Moonshine and Firegirl are in!!
  4. 3 or 4 of us are heading to Moab for that week on the motor bikes. I get to see some country I haven't seen before. Have fun guys.
  5. Pete, you can go to Moab some other time.....its not going anywhere. Besides, what's the big attraction, I've been there at least 10 times and all I've ever seen are a few big rocks in the Canyonlands, Arches, Potash Road, La Sal Mountain Loop, Needles, and Needles Overlook. Its just a bunch of scenic overload, you would have more fun hanging out with the cool guys and gals at Baker City.
  6. When McRider007, Buckwheat, Mooonshine and Wistrick all promise to show up, Saturday, Sunday, one overnight,
    well - can't go wrong.
    Hey, I am 'IN,' too.

  7. Well I suppose since I didn't get a summer break from school I'm almost required to give myself this vacation.

Not going if it's raining like last year though.......... :scared
  8. Hrm... My weekend off... I might have to meet you down there. I went down to the Hell's Canyon Rally in Baker earlier this year. By far the best rally I've been to, even though it was small and a bit rainy. So many cool routes around Baker.

*edit* Fuck it, I'm in. Started a thread in the Moscow/Pullman section to see if I can drag any of the other state line folks down there with me.

  9. Hmmm, must check calendar w/Mrs. G. Sept. in Baker City sounds good.
  10. Will there be some that like the twisties and a more advanced riding pace ?

  11. I might be in... anybody else coming from Salem? We could do an all-asphalt or mixed (dual sport) route.

I was tentatively planning a trip to Oregon Dunes for that weekend, but it's probably still preliminary enough to move it.

  12. +1 My Girlfriend and I will definitely try to make it! (Not a Beginner )
  13. Oh yes, tons o' twisties. Steve is a great leader, I assume, after experienced riders pair of with beginners, they will be some "spirited riders" left to from a group with.
  14. To add to Moonshines's comments, on previous Beginners Rides, the experienced riders have far out numbered beginners and we had formal groups with designated leaders and sweeps for the experienced riders since most of those riders had not ridden with each other and didn't know the best routes.

At this point, I don't think there is any valve added for me to select ride leaders for the experienced riders and/or tell them what routes they should take. The experienced riders can form their own groups, pick their routes, and meet in Baker City when they are done riding for the day.
  15. Hi Dave, I didn't know you were on this forum. Hope you can make it to Baker City and ....... bring some friends. The STN crowd is always welcome!:mfclap:
  16. I've been gone for a couple of weeks, I decided to take a little trip to ride a road I have read about for years............

and now that I have been there and done that, I can say that the Pig Trail isn't nearly as much fun as the roads we will be riding to......

I spent the night at the Oregon Trail motel and they said they only have 3 reservations to date for our ride so if you are planning to go you should reserve a room and take advantage of our group rate.
