couldnt find any online (didnt try that hard), can bikes in AMA superbike use non oem speck frame parts like swing, sub, etc? just an observation i couldnt help sharing and i respect Josh Hayes and love yamaha, It would seem that from his 2011 bike to 2012 bike, it evolved more wsbk r1 before they pulled out. here are some pics stock 2011 bike 2012 bike ama 2011 wsbk 2012 ama 2011 wsbk thoughts?
From the 2012 AMA regulations, looks like some rule violations to me 4.6 Frame ii. a. b. Frame and Sub Frame i. ii. iii. The main frame must remain as originally produced by the manufacturer for use on the homologated motorcycle with the following noted exceptions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Strengthening gussets and tubes may be added, but none may be removed. Sections or portions of the frame may not be replaced or modified.Examples of impermissible alterations being; but not limited to:replacing a section of frame visually identical but changing the material alloy, thickness,or modifying the homologated material in anyway. Accessory brackets (radiator, shock reservoir, stands, etc.) may be changed, relocated, added or removed. Holes may be drilled only for the purpose of attaching brackets or other components. The homologated dimensions and the position of the steering head, engine, swingarm pivot point, rear shock, and suspension linkage mounting points must remain as homologated on the original machine. No alternative mounting points may be created. The use of offset bearing races for the purpose of altering the steering angle is allowed as long as the steering stem remains within the confines of the stock steering head and no part of the insert protrudes axially more than 3mm beyond the original steering head. If the homologated frame has provisions for swingarm pivot adjustment blocks then the pivot may be adjusted within that range. If the homologated frame comes with the swingarm pivot in a fixed position then the swingarm must be run in that position. Front sub frame may be modified or replaced, but the material must remain as homologated and replacements must appear on the Eligible Equipment List. Rear sub frame may be modified or replaced, but the material must remain as homologated and replacements must appear on the Eligible Equipment List. Polishing of frame materials is not allowed. Frames must display a unique 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that was assigned to it in production. AllVINs mustberegisteredwithAMAProRacing. Swingarm may be modified as follows: i. Rear wheel stand mounts may be added to the swingarm by welding or by bolts. Brackets must have rounded edges (with a large radius). Mounting bolts must be recessed
I've seen it up close and even had Josh Hayes explain some of the differences. It is legal per the rules, they just pushed it as far as they could. You will see that they are actually allowed to add material and bracing to the OEM frame. The stock R1 chassis simply isn't that good until a TON of work is done to it in this manner. If you search around the net, you will find a build thread somewhere from Riders Discount where they built an R1 up to go run AMA and they specifically detail the amount of additional material and bracing that they had to do to fix the chassis. They basically copied the information from Graves.
Here is a build thread from Riders Discount. Don't recall this one being the specific one I was reading, but I believe they simply copied and pasted the post on various forums. http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286429
It doesn't say that material to the swingarm can't be added, or modified, as long as the pivot points are the same.
wow You guys are real detectives.......you've discovered that Josh Hayes is a cheater!!!!1! Might want to let the AMA know your findings.
Correct. Hayes' bikes is legal, at least as far any anyone can see. The R1 is a huge turd unless you do massive work to it, and all the work that you see in those pics is legal per the rulebook.
AMA has allowed modifications to the rules to allow one team to have additional parts that another team may not be allowed to have. For instance maybe a modded frame or swing arm for Yamaha, and Suzuki gets higher compression pistons. A modded swing arm is nothing compared to letting a liter bike run in the 600 classes.
