Naked or Street Fighter or Cafe

Discussion in 'Motorcycle Talk' started by Yamadog, Nov 26, 2012.

  1. So I guess I'm not as close to dead as I thought and my cruiser just doesn't hit my funny bone so much. I'm thinking of getting another bike, one that will scratch my itch for a little speed and I'm stuck between three styles.

I started off with a '92 ZX6... well back in '92 so I know that I want something light, and nimble, not necessarily a face peeler.

What makes a street fighter a street fighter? Is it just stripping it naked? If so why not call it "naked"?

The best bike I've seen so far was a gsxr and it was stripped of fairings and everything was coated with Rhino Lining, I almost bought just for that alone LOL.

Street Fighter usually refers to a sport bike that has been crashed or just stripped of the plastic and sometimes dirt bike bars installed. They are effectively naked bikes, but usually a little more high performance and usually a little rougher. Have you looked at a Yamaha FZ1 or Aprilia Tuono?

For factory bikes, the Tuono is hard to beat. Fightered liter bikes will always be a little faster and perform at the track better, but for 90% of your use the Tuono is perfect.
  4. Not sure about the "track" yet, might look into a 250 to start there, but I have lot's of twisties close by and the cruiser just lacks any fun through them. I've looked at the Tuono, FZ1, FZ6 and the Versys plus the Ducs naked bikes. For a looks perspective I'm partial to the Monsters.

I was just trying to wrap my head around the differences of the bikes. Don't think I want to place my ass on a liter bike until after I re-learn some of the basics and I'm just looking for the daily rider with some fun factor in it. Always have the cruiser for long trips with the girlfriend...
  5. The Triumph Bonneville, Moto Guzzi V7 Racer, and Ducati Sport GT all fit the bill for modern and reliable, yet still classic lines, on bikes that you can have fun with out on country roads. The new Honda CB500/1100 series are "standard" style bikes of yesteryear. The FZ series are great bikes, however the FZ6 has about the worst stock suspension in the world.

True "cafe" bikes are European, made between the early 60's to about '75. Japanese bikes later got included in the "cafe" name, mostly because they were cheaper to buy and way more reliable.
Naked bikes either come that way from the factory, or people wreck faired bikes and don't bother to fix them. They think that by adding dirt style bars and a single headlight, that they have a streetfighter, but they're not streetfighters.
True streetfighters have a lot of work put into them. Typically one-off exhausts, subframes, coolant over-flows, etc. The Ducati Streetfighter, KTM Superduke, etc. were bikes built to fit the market that developed because of the custom stuff that was being done.

Not a streetfighter (though he probably thinks it is): [IMG]

    Cafe: [IMG]
  7. So "Naked" is just that, naked of fairings and other plastics... "Street Fighter" is similar but much more time and money spent to modify and improve performance of the bike?

Cafe I'm familiar with and since I can't afford a Norton or Vincent I'll go with the Japanese market if that's the route I choose.

    Thanks for the input...
  8. If you like the Monsters then I'd go with that. They are sexy, composed, fun in the twisties and good for trips even. Can ride two up OK. Sound great. And, everybody notices them and likes them, even Harley guys. They can also be outfitted in a myriad of styles. Just image Google Monster and you'll see every flavor imaginable.

If you do want a Monster-type face-melter, you could get the Diavel.

  9. Cafe = Standard bike stripped/retrofitted to be more of a sport bike.

Streetfighter = Sport bike stripped/retrofitted to be more of a standard.

Naked = Anything without a fairing.
  10. Drop the leathers and go neked!!
    Great on warm days!!
    Shrink-age on the cool ones!!
  11. Ducati Monster!

I really like mine a lot. If you want your funny bone tickled, monster will probably do it. I'd like to get a Ducati Streetfighter or a Tuono next, but have to wait a bit.

Don't know your what you are looking for other than more fun.
PM me if you are really interested in a monster.

imho- not sure how one is a fighter, and the other isnt?

  13. SV650. These are fun bikes that can be bought for a resonable price. If you want something newer with more power/better suspension and roughly the same weight as an sv650, a Triumph Street Triple R is hard to beat.

The red one just has the fairings off and an Ebay headlight. Anyone can do that.

The black one has been modified from the ground up. Custom swingarm, front end, tail section,'s a fighter.

its not a street-fighter unless its basically "custom"?

IMO, yes. Most bikes look like ass with the fairings removed. Takes some work to make it eye worthy.

That may be true now, but the origin of streetfighters was guys crashing their sport bikes in the UK and not being able to afford to repair them, so they would just remove the broken plastic and mount any available headlight. :secret:
  18. +1 on the Ducati Monster. I put over 30,000 on it and loved every second. They are great all around bikes. The FZ1 is also a fantastic bike. I use ours for commuting, bad weather riding, and long distance/overnight trips. Both the Monster and FZ1 perform well on the track. Overall, I think the FZ1 is the better bike, but the Monster has far more character.

You could also consider the Ducati Streetfighter - not technically a streetfighter, but a standard (naked = standard).
  19. Thanks to all of you for the help understanding the terminology. Perfect bike would be the Diavel Strada with the passenger back rest and the hard bags but I don't have
$22K and still owe too much on my cruiser. And I like the comfortability of the cruiser.

So that leaves me with deciding what I like the most... and what is for sale at the time I have the cash. If I played the lotto and won I'd have one of everything!
  20. I think this explains it better than I could.
