Need Help Deciding First Moto!!!

  1. Hello all,

    I am in the market for my first motorcycle and I really need some help making my mind up. I really want a bike that is quick and powerful for short rides around the city (live in Seattle) but is comfortable for longer commutes across the state and what have you.

    I have narrowed it down to either the naked SV 650 or the Ninja 650r. My concerns with the SV lie in the fact that it is a naked bike and I have heard that wind from the lack of fairings often becomes troublesome after long distances (do added windscreens really help with that?). My hold up with the ninja is that I have read SV's are much easier to maintain and are hardier bikes (I am under no allusion that I won't drop this bike a few times and I fear the Ninja would be less tolerant).

    If anyone has any advice regarding this I would GREATLY appreciate it

    check on insurance rates for both, that might help. i have heard the ninja is a bit more to insure. see if you cant test ride both, that should help as well, good luck with your search!

  6. I have a small windscreen on a SV650n. I can do 500 mile days on it if ya make me.

    I only have trouble with wind while being buffeted in dirty air on the freeway and even then it isn't deal-breaking, just annoying.

    And I wear an Arai XD-3.

    So my simple solution is to try and avoid freeway riding as much as possible. That said, my 500 mile days were all freeway charging home from Yellowstone to tend to a sick family member.

    Either bike will be fine, which ever you find used and cheap first.
     
  7. You can also try the Versys if you would like. It makes a great commuter that can pull double duty as a canyon carver. The upright position of it is comfortable for longer distances.

  8. Good choice. I actually added taller/wider/more pull back, dirt bike bars to the SV to make it more vstrom/versys like.
     
  9. Depending on your budget, you might also consider some of the 500 size bikes, like the GS500 (E or F, depending on whether you want a fairing). The insurance difference can be amazingly large, with barely a difference in performance. You can pick them up for about the same price as a 250 Ninja these days, too.

    Naked SV650 would be my choice. Getting a naked bike after over a decade of not riding definitely took some getting used to, but once you do, it can't be beat. Having a bike with a fairing and one without, up to about 120, I'd choose the naked any day of the week, in any weather.
     
  11. Of the few bikes mentioned in this thread i only have personal experience with two.

    1. 2002 sv650-I have a buddy who owns one, it is his first bike. He seems to like it, he does mention that w/ no fairings it can get windy. It seems to be plenty powerful, although i have never ridden it.

    2. 2009 Suzuki V-Strom650- Dad owns this bike. I personally have rode this bike. PLenty quick, can go on/off road. You can add many luggage accessories to it (maybe you can with the SV too, idk). If your serious about taking those long cross state trips, id consider this bike.

  12. I have a naked bike and really like it.
    I've done long trips at speed and track days.
    IMHO as you are new to bikes I'd recommend not spending much time around the triple digit mark.

    sign up for a track day after a couple months.

    I really like the naked SV, but I'm biased. You really can't go wrong with an SV, Versys, Ninja 650, Versys, or ER-6N, just get the one you like best. They are all good bikes.
     
  14. It sounds like wind is a concern for either bike. Unless you plan doing a lot of long distance - at least 500 miles per day - riding, this won't be an issue. My FZ1 has minimal fairings and my old bike, a Ducati Monster, had none. I used both as my daily commuter (60 miles/day round trip). I used to ride the Monster to Portland and Spokane and did several North Cascade Loops (out on HWY 2 and back on HWY 20). My FZ1 is now my "rainy day" commuter and the one that I take on longer trips. Maybe I'm used to it, but I don't recall any issues with wind fatigue on either bike.

    I also bought my FZ1 with an extended windscreen, but I don't think it makes a big difference. I'm not a big fan of the look and would change it back to the stock size, but I'm too lazy.

    IMHO, either bike would be an outstanding choice. As others have said, take a MSF class if you haven't already and try doing a track day/school after a year or so of riding. Your riding will improve more than you can imagine and you'll have more fun than you can believe.

  15. Did ya make a mistake listing the bikes off? Or did you do that on purpose?

  17. I'm a bit partial to the SV650 myself. Lots of possibilities with that bike, including track days if you become so inclined. Plus, it's got that neat-sounding v-twin.

    I ride a naked around town and for longer highway commutes, and have never really felt all that put off by wind. In the dead of winter it can get a bit cold without a fairing, but that's what bar mitts are for. I don't start missing fairing until I'm well over the speed limit, and I have to tuck in hard to avoid being blown off the bike. However, unless you're looking at doing triple digits, I wouldn't worry about that... :evil4:
