    Exploring their sexuality

Students form campus porn club to create a safe place to discuss, view and potentially make pornography

    By Dionne Desiano
    April 20, 2005

Sex is a hot topic, especially on a college campus full of inquisitive minds. At the UW, a group of 10 students has come together to explore the world of pornography, sex and the political issues surrounding them.

Charity Ranger was raised in a conservative Christian home and went to private schools, hardly ever leaving West Seattle. After coming to the UW, she was exposed to many different areas of thought and became interested in women's rights, which led to her interest in the politics of pornography.

Between her and another friend from the Women's Action Committee (WAC) a bet was waged that the University wouldn't permit a porn club on campus, and so the Amateur Porn Club was born.

Ranger's interest launched the club, which became a forum for activities such as watching and making pornography.

The Amateur Porn Club was started last quarter by members of the WAC. This is the first club on campus that has wanted to base itself around sex and pornography issues.

The club's goals are to provide a safe place to talk about, view and create independent pornography. They also want to educate members about the debates and history surrounding pornography and sex.

"I find it hard to talk about these things within groups of friends because there are no parameters, and it can turn into a big anti-woman, sexist discussion," said Ranger. "If you have set parameters to talk about porn, it doesn't have to go to a place where you don't want it to," said Ranger.

Allyson Kolan, a freshman, is the club president. She has spearheaded the concept of talking about individual sexuality and the making of pornography within the club.

The group is continuing WAC's feminist principles of anti-sexism, anti-oppression and pro-consent methods. To become a club member, students must be 18 or older, be enrolled at the UW and abide by feminist principles.

The club hopes to create its own pornography on or off campus, but members don't plan on selling it. Pornography will be made between consenting members within a safe and private area.

The club will not film pornography, however, until they have spoken to their adviser about the legal issues surrounding privacy, nudity and motivations behind filming.

In addition to goals of creating pornography, the group also takes field trips. Last Friday night, five club members went to Capitol Hill's Toys in Babeland. The club will be going on two more trips this quarter -- to The Erotic Bakery, which sells sex gags and treats and The Wet Spot, a sex-positive community center near Queen Anne.

"The UW has never encountered this subject before and as a result there are no regulations for filming pornography, aside from any local laws and ordinances that might govern such behavior," said Norm Arkans, UW executive director of media relations and communication.

"The UW does regulate the use of its public spaces, and although there are currently no rules on the books, students can still be held responsible for what administrators would deem inappropriate behavior in such public spaces," said Arkans.

Filming in general is a form of free speech and technically, as long as no one is filming in front of fire exits, it cannot be prohibited, said Paul Zuchowski, associate director of student activities and union facilities.

He said the other rule for filming on campus is the UW and the HUB can't be identifiable.

"Members have expressed a desire to videotape porn, but we are also a great place to get information and resources," said Kolan. "We don't want to make any money off of pornography; this is not a business."

Kolan enjoys watching pornography and judging the background music. She said that often the music doesn't match the sex scene and is unsatisfying.

Ranger, on the other hand, is interested in the debate about pornography: Is it oppressing or liberating, does it objectify women or is it a woman's choice?

Ranger, who has attended porn parties, said they provide a safe environment to talk about porn preferences, sex questions and meet new people who are also interested.

She said at the party she attended, the guests eventually turned off the sound on the pornographic videos and found their own music to fit the sex scenes.

The group is looking forward to holding theme talks about masturbation, such as enhancing personal and partner enjoyment.

"At this point, the club is in its baby stages, and it can become whatever the members want to make of it," said Kolan.

The club's members desire to have an open forum for pornography and sex issues.

"This isn't for everybody; not everyone is interested in porn. I think if you are, it's better to do it in a safe space that you can feel safe and comfortable in," said Kolan. "This will allow students to talk about questions or opinions they have and find others that are interested in the same things."

I think I know this Charity lady. I've met her before, she's a friend of my GF's brother and is from West Seattle, and goes to UW... can't be too many people with a name like that!

    (edit)

False alarm. I guess there is another Charity who was raised in a Christian environment, never left West Seattle and goes to UW.

    Who'da thunk?

I generally keep the porn viewing to my own residence, or that of whoever I'm seeing... but if someone feels they need a club for it then who am I to judge? Hey, they might even want to team up with people learning about photography etc. :scratchea

Wow, this is an old thread.
