An extremely rare animal with a short lifespan. Usually a new sport bike enthusiast with the reasoning of a lunitic, whom you might see thrashing on an R1 wearing sandels, shorts and a tee. When found lying motionless on the pavement, this creaturetransforms itself into a stream of blood, exposed flesh, and broken limbs. Hence squid!:angry7:

When I started riding on the street in '85, shorts t-shoes was what I wore. I admitr that. But as I got older i relaelixed that good gear made riding more fun and safer. Also after being in the hospital from a hang gliding acident, and seeing the guy in the room next to me who was one large scab after a M/C crash, I was convinced to get training and the proper gear.

  6. I've been riding on the street for over 25 years. I'm neither new, or young.

Went for a ride yesterday in the same attire, even went *fast* at times.

I might be a Squid, but fail to see how this affects you?

It can offend some of the tender sensibilities of many of our more insecure members. :secret:

It's a personal choice (just like everything else) we can't pretend like we know how our ride will end up could be our own fault or the inattentiveness of others, accidents happen. While I usually ride w/ gear, sometimes I'll be a squid. Most people are aware that the road isn't made of pillows and know what happens when skin meets it but it's a risk that some are willing to take and it has no affect on other riders. Don't like it? Don't ride with squids, easy peasy. This crap is like talking politics/religion.

  9. Actually it does affect everyone. Squids go down, die as a result of no gear; adds to the statistics. More deaths on motorcycles = higher insurance and stricter laws.

Not that it's going to change a damned thing in anyone's mind, but I'd prefer to not have the local LEOs start playing "Gestapo" like the poor bastards up north have to deal with. Or pay more money for insurance... that one sucks enough already.

  10. I know of some very recent rider fatalities, and they had full gear.

You may have painted a bad picture of what you think a person's attitude is like just because of what they wear when they ride which is just silly to me. People are going to ride how they ride regardless of what they're wearing. I have seen just as many hooligans in gear as I have squids.

  14. And where did I say that riders in gear never die? Or is pulling things out of context just another service you offer?

Actually my point about insurance is more likely to stick if the squid lives. Ambulance ride, icu, skin grafts, transfusions, PT/rehab. The type of accident that causes those is one where a rider in full gear stands some sort of chance to walk away from; pissed off, but walking.

  15. It's all about freedom of choice and if it does add to statistics than that becomes the flaw in statistics.

We've had a really awful summer with Motorbike fatalities, lets not predict or pick on each other and focus more on how we can improve our own selves before pointing the fingers.

    Hope everyone has good/safe weekend!

  17. No, but I see you've mastered the art of back pedaling with one foot in your mouth. Bravo!

  18. I get where this whole concept is steaming from. But it really is a dead end conversation. Just like cars and trucks have transpired... until the local authority requires full gear by law (like they now require seatbelts in vehicles) people are going to do as they please. No need to get panties in twists. Just enjoy the ride to your own fulfillment!
