Ok, so I am NOT mechanically inclined. I have a 2009 CBR 1000. I laid it down pretty easy about 2 weeks ago. I was going around a corner pretty slow but then hit the throttle too hard before straightening out. I laid down on the left side. Some coolant was on the ground from the bike. After standing the bike back up, there has been nothing leaking from it. I have ran the engine, but have only ridden it here in my parking lot. There is water drops spraying out of the exhaust. Thinking maybe it was just condensation built up in the pipe, I have ran the engine repeatedly for awhile at a time to burn it off. I just went out and started it again, and sure enough there is still water drops spraying out. Yesterday, for the first time, there was actually water leaking out of a drain hole in the bottom of the exhaust. This didn't last too long. What is wrong, why is water getting into my exhaust?? The engine seems to be running fine. Should I be worried? I don't want to go off riding it only to blow something, etc. Thanks!! Trent
Water is a product of combustion. you are burning oxygen (O2) and hydrocarbons (HC). Chemical reaction will include water (H2O). My zx-10 does the same thing. as does my truck. especially after idling for a while. ever let your car run for a while, and see water under the exhaust pipe outlet?
Is it smoking at all? If you were burning coolant, you'd see white smoke on a cold start. Burning gas/air creates water as a product of the reaction and it's not unusual for water to leak from the exhausts of running cars/bikes/whatever. It may be just more noticeable with all the moisture we've had from weeks on end of rain. Check for odd smells and smoke from the exhaust though.
As described by the others, condensation is normal in any vehicle. I was surprised though that coolant would be leaking on a minor lay down. Maybe different for different bikes, but the time I dropped mine on the left, it leaked gas (and was what I was advised to watch for if it goes down).
There is a little bit of white smoke that comes out when I first start it - but it is a pretty cool/damp day today. I ran it for just a little bit and no more water. I then let it sit for about 30 minutes and just took it out for the first "ride" since being laid down. I rode for about 15-20 minutes, mostly around 45-55 mph. I stopped in the middle of the trip and checked - no water or white smoke. The engine seems to be running just fine and the temp is running normal. Maybe, (hopefully) nothing is wrong. I just want to make sure. Again, as I know nothing of mechanical stuff, I would really hate to make a stupid mistake and ride it if I shouldn't and then blow then engine, etc. Thanks guys. Trent
if i were you i would check my coolant level after riding, if it keeps going down then its leaking from somewhere... my SV had a coolant leak after a fat rock hit the radiator, and it stopped on its own..., the coolant dries white and its green so its easy to see if its coolant...depending on the coolant you have, might want to check
What he said. If it runs fine, don't worry about it. If it smells sweet and overheats, then you have issues. Other than that, water dripping out your ass end is perfectly normal. Perfect combustion yields water, C02 and a few unburned HCs as well as <2% C0. If you are not seeing water out of your tail pipe, you are not burning gasoline
Ok, I took it on a ride today - total of about 1.5 hours of riding. Ran just fine, temp got up to 226, which I've seen it hit before, and then the fan kicks in. Coolant level does not seem to be changing and I haven't seen any more white smoke from the exhaust. I will check it again first thing tomorrow, after sitting all night and see. I think from laying it down some coolant/water got into somewhere or something and now it is all burnt off. Thanks everyone for setting me at ease. From some research, I was afraid of a cracked head or something like that. Like I said, I know NOTHING about mechanics.
One more thing you could do if you are still having water drips (which I wouldn't worry about) is to go out on a ride and when you get back pull the plugs, and smell them. If a cylinder has had water in it the plug will not only be white but when you smell it it will smell like a burnt tea pot. From what you have said everything should be fine. Hope not too much damage was done to you or your bike when you went down.
