Taste of Racing - June 20th and 21st 2009
Where: Portland International Raceway
Date's: June 20th and June 21st 2009 - The weather looks perfect!
When: During OMRRA lunch time, click here to see the detailed race day schedule for approximate track crossing times and lunch. (scroll down to the race weekend date for the detailed daily schedule)
Gate Discount: Print out this coupon for $2 off the $10 gate fee (need one per person)

Please read this before coming to the track, it is your responsibility to know the rules, and expectations: Taste of Racing

$20 for 20 minutes, Taste of Racing is an opportunity for motorcycle enthusiasts to experience the thrill of racing, cornering, and riding fast in a safe environment where you won't get a ticket!! Sound like fun? Want to try it out? Click on the Taste of Racing link above for specific details!

Dark Horse Racing is running ToR again this year, we are pitted on the second row in from the Start/Finish line. You cant miss us, we will have a ToR sign at our pits, and our Carolina blue race bikes.

We are also accepting volunteers to work corners during the ToR events. If you are interested in ToR but don't have a bike, or are not sure if you're ready for the track, you can volunteering some time and help us by working a corner! Anyone who volunteers to work a corner for us, can ride the next ToR for free! We will also be BBQing in our pits and will feed anyone who help's out.

NOTE, there are some new changes being incorporated into ToR, please read over the following:

- At NO point should any ToR participant pass the lead rider, he will be wearing an orange vest and be very visible. Please people, do not pass the lead bike, he is there for a reason. We will discuss this in more detail at the ToR riders meeting

- Max number of riders is now 30

- No sparky kneepucks, they look cool, but they are a serious distraction for someone who may not be expecting them, and could cause them to think you are actually crashing, and thusly, check-up and potentially crash, or cause a crash themselves. Please do not use them, if we see them, we will pull you off the track

- We are going to stagger the starts in hopes of avoiding the accordion effect going into T1 and T7. You will see someone waving 5 or so bikes onto the track at a time, then waiting a few seconds before sending the next wave

- Registration will now end 30 minutes before, or 15 minutes after the last track crossing, which ever is closer to lunch. We can no longer rush people through registration and bike tech at lunch time. This is not fair to those who were there early and are ready to get on the track. If you show up at the lunch time track crossing, you will be turned away, sorry. This means, if you arrive after the last track crossing, park your bike on the outside of the track, walk across the bridge to register without your bike, you will be turned away. We have a limited timeframe to complete ToR, and the number of people showing up at the lunchtime track crossing is getting to be to much for us to manage. Sorry

- Track Entry/Exit. Everyone should stage their bikes near the tower before ToR, that's where we have the riders meeting, so it makes the most sense to have your bikes there. The lead rider will bring everyone onto the hotpit. The problem we see has mostly to do with track exit. You basically have two options for leaving the track

First: Return to the inside pits - if its before the end of the ToR, raise your hand early on the back straight so anyone behind you can see your going to do something, slow down to a moderate speed without hammering your brakes. Enter T7 and ensure you have your hand up as best you can, hug the INSIDE of T8 and T9 and come into the hotpit entry, there is an immediate exit there on your right. If its at the end of ToR, raise your hand and slow down and follow the bikes around and enter the hoptpit and take the immediate right into the inside pits. Remember, if you come back inside, you are stuck until the next track crossing

Second: Exit to the outside of the track - If its before the end of ToR, raise your hand early on the back straight so anyone behind you can see your going to do something, slow down to a moderate speed without hammering your brakes. Enter T7 and ensure you have your hand up as best you can, stay on the OUTSIDE of T8 and take the access road at the beginning of T9. If its at the end of ToR, raise your hand and slow down and follow the bikes around and exit on the T9 access road. Please make sure you are not cutting in front of anyone returning to the inside pits when taking the access road. DO NOT for what ever reason, come around T9 and turn around and take the drag strip!

- Flags:
Red Flag: There has been an incident on the track, and we need everyone to raise their hand, get out of the throttle, and return to the hotpit cautiously (not the inside, or outside pits). Do not for any reason stop on the track to help someone. The hotpit is where we launched you in waves

Black Flag: If you see a black flag pointed at you, raise your hand to acknowledge that you saw the black flag, make sure while going down the back straight you raise your hand so anyone behind you knows your going to do something, slow down to a moderate speed, go around T7 and hug the inside of T8/9 and go into the hotpit and talk to the person at the start/finish line. If your in a group, everyone should come in. If you are not he bike they want to talk too, they will send you right back out onto the track

Checkered Flag: Everyone wins! ToR is over, reduce speed, go around the track and exit to the inside pits, or outside the track. Please refer to the above Track Entry/Exit for where to exit

- If a rider crashes, all other riders return to the hotpit area (where we start from) and wait for instructions. Two or more control riders will assist the downed rider. If the rider is ok, the bike cleared from any impact zones, and the track clear of any debris, we will resume ToR immediately. If the rider is not ok, or there is oil/coolant on the track that needs cleanup, ToR is done for the day. One of the control riders will ride the downed rider back to the pit area, and Blinky will get the bike after ToR is complete (unless he wants to sooner, remember this is his lunch period)

- Bike/Gear tech: If your gear, and or bike look questionable, we may not let you ride. Look at your gear, if it does not conform to the ToR guidelines, then you wont get to ride. Look over your bike, if its an older bike, make sure everything is secure, not leaking, etc.

If anyone has any questions, please post them here, or PM me directly.

Lastly, I want to thank OMRRA, our sponsors, and all the volunteers who help make this event happen!

Hope to see you there!

You asked for input, here's me $.02 that seems to be echo'd by many who made the last TOR....

PLEASE make sure that the "lead rider" is wearing a different color than the control riders...Black or red would be cool for *those* of us who are colorblind (!), and it seemed to work well enough in the past...Enough said!

Reduction in total riders seems to be a no-brainer after the last time, haha. Sucks about the sparkies though ; )

Please make note of this people! This has been my sig. tactic for TOR the last few times, so I'll have to set an example of sorts and get my shit across before the track crossing!

2 Issues: Last time, multiple "control" riders continued to lap AFTER the waving red flag was shown on all corners.
Checkered flag: I was waved down for doing +/- 85/90 on the front/back straights after the checkered was thrown....It should be a "reduced" pace, correct, but not "waving red flag" pace, no?

I've got the upmost respect for the whole crew that puts on TOR's; you guys give many of us the best 20 mins of our entire month by a LONG shot, and I think it's realistic that there will ALWAYS be recurring issues that you've got to keep addressing. Thank you all for all your hard work for a PROFIT-LESS cause, and for taking the time to consider some concerns from the last TOR.

Is there a noise level restriction to participate? Just wondering so I don't get turned away if I ride my Buell instead of the FZ1.

Not sure about TOR but there is a 103dB limit for the racers and OMRRA gets a BIG fine if anyone is over.

Oh, and in for both days!

Is the dB limit a PIR thing? I'm wondering about track days. I think my bike is rather loud now also.

There is a big thread about the dB limit in the Rules and Tech section of the OMRRA forum. If I understand correctly, whoever rents the track is held responsible for any noise infractions.

btw- I live ~3 miles south of PIR and you would be amazed at how far sound from the track carries (not that it bothers me). I can hear everything that goes on there like its a few blocks away.

^^^While I went to Clark College across the river in the 'Couve, you could hear the races all the way out there.

So could anyone tell me, that has ridden with me, if my bike would be too loud?

The racetrack is in a city park. All city parks have a noise restriction. PIR is 103dBA. If a bike exceeds that, they will be pulled from the track until they can fix the issue.

Im guessing, unless your running some crazy aftermarket exhaust, or straight pipes on that buell, you should be fine.

110dBA at what? the pipe? That's friggin loud!

The 103dBA max is a measurement taken at 50 feet from track side.

But if you think your bike may trigger it, and you have something else you can ride, I would encourage you to ride the quieter bike.

Drazen your bike is fine dude! You are gunna love the track. When was the last time you were braking from top speed for what would be a 35mph righthander on the street? You will get to 15-18 times.

See ya there

^^^Sweet thanks Ed! I don't, so never.

Well my TOR is up in the air a bit, since I volunteered myself to ride on one of them 3-wheeled contraptions. It seems like they might not like it so much if I crash on TOR especially if they put effort in to training me. Either way I will see you out there.

Thanks. I found out the registration part.

Is everyone riding to the track or trailering your bikes? I'll just ride to the track. Do I need to tape up the headlights and remove the mirrors for this?

Everything is addressed in the above link, found in the original post.
The bike requirements doesn't mention anything about removal of lights, plate, mirrors, etc., hence they're allowed on track for TOR....

Is everyone riding to the track or trailering your bikes? I'll just ride to the track. Do I need to tape up the headlights and remove the mirrors for this?
