I have been thinking of stepping up to slicks for track days. where should I order them? I can mount them myself, I would rather pay a extra $50 for a 09' made set than some older date codes. That is the problem with buying tires online. BUT it is too much of a hassle to get new tires mounted before a track day first thing in the morning. |

DOT's are just as good, and cheaper. | |

You could call up Sport Tire Services, but really Barry @ KFG will give you the best deal. And it's really no hassle at all to just show up at the track to buy them and get them mounted. That's what everyone else does. |

Although Slicks give more contact patch, the Track Record was broken by Ross Delong in Open Supersport on DOT's this last Race Weekend. Granted, MikeM took away that record again on Sunday in Formula Ultra, but that gives yah an idea of how much yah have to work with on DOT's. |

They will suggest what tires to use, what pressures to run, and what temps to use on your adjustable tire warmers. You do have warmers, right? Also, once you buy tires from a local vendor, you have a tire resource for ever. They will flip your tires, sell you take-offs, and mount your rains for free (as long as you keep going to the same vendor, of course). They will also give you advise when you need it and grief when you don't. Hell, Barry let me borrow his vacuum bleeder and I run Pirelli's. How cool is that? Modern DOT's rock, but try different tires and compounds to find what you like. |

(When I'm speaking of DOT's I mean DOT RACE tires.) The DOT's are nominally "street legal" but many of them are of the same compound, construction and profile as the Slicks. They make terrible street tires, they do not last, do not come up to temperature and in general do not work as street tires. (Don't ask me how I know...) I have run Dunlops and Pirellis Slick rears with DOT fronts (of course both tires were the same brand) without any handling issues. The slicks do not have a larger contact patch compared to the same size DOT, unless you count the very minimal difference for the 'rain' grooves on DOT's required to pass DOT standards. DOT's do not have grooves on the edge of the tire. They are slicks once you tip in... The slicks last a little bit longer, but they costs a little bit more... It's nearly a push. Typically I will run DOT's cuz they are legal for all classes, unless the specific size/compound I want is only available in the slick. The difference in traction of the DOT and slick RACE tire is absolutely negligable. Last edited by NoQuarter#121; 06-26-2009 at 01:46 PM.. |
