Race Prep WMRRA Tech question - what happens if tailsection is too small for numbers?
Hi all,

I am prepping a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR (pictured in the Avatar) that has a minimalist tail-section that is so tiny that the three digit number cannot fit on both sides (too narrow and too short).

I can barely fit one set of digits across the top of the tail section but this is in violation of the WMRRA rulebook where it states per section D-24d, "All number plates must be visible at 100 feet from the front and each side of the motorcycle while the rider is in a normal seating position (Section E-24f). Non-conforming motorcycles are subject to black-flagging (Section J-4)."

There is no way to wrap the numbers around the thin tail-section where it is visible (you would need to do a 180 degree rotation to see the number) on both sides of the bike.

The older Yamaha R6's had the same problem but Yamaha had a plan - they offered screw-on number plates for racing... I've googled the cbr1000rr for number plates and nothing came up.

Does anyone out there race a CBR1000RR and if so how did you place your numbers on the tailsection to pass WMRRA tech? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Use the mid-section body work. Numbers have to be visible from the sides, not necesarily on the tail.

Number plates on side - great idea
Wow -placing the number plates on the side bodywork is really thinking outside the box - great idea! It won't look that great covering my "poseur" Rizla decals but will get the job done just the same.

Crisis averted!

Thanks for the help - and will look for your numbers out there on July 12th in Spokane!

I'm going back to the garage to get the number plates positioned now...

Sincerely,

Steve

You don't have to be polite here Phil, we know you use it as TP and fire kindling.

It's too soft and smooth for me to use as TP, and it doesn't burn with enough hate and evil to keep me warm.

No, usually just graduated Novices. Or Tophyr. He's due for a good scrubbing in Spokane.

To the OP- If your numbers are not visible, Scoring or Start/Finish will have me come find you. No big deal, but just make sure that the numbers are distinct and clear, no skinny numbers on a small background. I would strongly suggest 8" numbers (I almost typed 8') until you graduate out of Novice. Once you are an "expert", the bikes are generally recognized by Start/Finish, unless you have a multi colored bike with super skinny numbers. Remember that your side numbers are mostly for the corner workers in case something goes terribly awry and start/finish needs to give you the black flag or you did something kinda foolish and I get to walk over and find you for a chat.

Rulebook and number size
Hey,

I have raced 2 years (one race each year) expert level with WMRRA #177 then #417 on an CBR600RR in 2006 and 2007 respectively. And really want to see how I measure up with the fast guys this year as last year could not get to the track often over the past 3 years due to running my own business (work is a four-letter-word!).

Now with business being allot slower I have had allot of practice at Spokane this year and want to see how I measure up against the Experts at WMRRA.

I bought 6" numbers per the rulebook and quite honestly even the side-fairings on the CBR1000RR are so tiny that they barely fit.

Thanks again for the information and kudos on my bike - it turned-out allot better than anticipated thanks to a great paint job this winter. It will puff Rizla blue dust when I throw it down the track... (one day)

Okay, no problem. I just always assume that someone is a Novice when they quote the rule book. Seriously. Experts rarely do it, except to try and prove a point or gain an exception from the rule book.

Anyway, do what you can to make them legible, and we'll do what we can to tell you apart from everyone else. You can always put a set on top of the tail section in addition to the side plates, nothing stopping you there. If you think that 4" numbers on the tail work better than 6" numbers on the side, look around for me and I can come and take a look or have Bill and Debbie check it out. We just want clarity from a distance.

I'll be there.

#121

Come on by and say hello.

I will be in both of the races your 1000 techs for.

Open SS and Formula Ultra. (on a 750)

I did OK last time out there. .29's and a 5th in Open I think... Not bad for a measly little 750....

See you at the track!

Nice bike
I just want to have the bike ready for tech and not have any distractions of a technical "bs" issue like numbers when there are so many other important items to keep the bike safe and one's head clear.

Nice photo of #63 - I see how you have the numbers. Crazy how there is no racing number plate available online like on Yamaha's factory number plates available for the R6. How cool would that be on the CBR1000RR?

#121 - nice lap times on any bike (especially a 750) - those are my fastest lap times now so it will be great to be racing with aggressive riders. I'll be happy to finish in top 10 on the 12th...

pscook what # are you?

I'll be #177 doing only the Formula Ultra race Sunday so have plenty of time to come visit and look out for y'all.

Excellent way to do it, we are always ready to help fix things before they become a problem. Usually Tech will ask for clarification before they fail someone or make a big stink about stuff like numbers and such.

#217, black GSXR600. My only race is 600TFS which is end of the day Sunday EVERY STINKING WEEKEND so I have plenty of time to sit around and do nothing. If you need to find me just find someone with a radio and ask for Phil, the referee. I'm kinda easy to find sometimes.
