Who's going? I would like to go, but I need some help carting my shit to the track. I don't have a truck or a trailer, so I am pretty much stuck.

Thanks Del, but Brian (Polvo2) is hooking me up. I appreciate it though. Maybe I can get you to follow me around for a few laps and tell me how eff'd up I am out there on the track.

You say that now, but you haven't seen how slow I am.

My absolute best lap was a 1:23 with a consistant 1:25, but that was with warped rotors. I got decent rotors now, so I am hoping for a consistant 1:20ish.

Well, because of the warped rotors, I wasn't comfortable going all out down the front or back. I was shutting down at about 140 on the front and about 115 on the back, so now with decent rotors, I will feel better about running it all the way up on the front and back. Thus allowing me to carry more speed through 1, 1A, and 2 as well as 7 and 8. I figure all of that combined, plus the fact that I am just getting more experience on the track should cut my time by 5 secs per lap. Now, I just got to get the balls to do it, I know that I have the skill, its the sack that is holding me back.

Yeah, I was just kidding with ya, brakes you actually want to use helps. hehe. I still like the sound of Magic 5 sec rotors though. Keep an eye out for me.

Well, considering you will be passing me, you should keep an eye out for me. I don't look at what's behind me about to pass. So, I guess that since I am always getting passed and never passing, I could probably just shut my eyes!

My $0.02 FWIW: Don't worry too much about lap times, work on being smooth and consistent. When you get a solid foundation the lap times will drop.

The ultimate goal is to have the entire track mapped out in your brain as far as line selection, gear selection, brake points, etc. at a comfortable pace while adhering to all the basic riding principles (braking, turn-in, hitting your apexes, staying on the race line, body position, etc.). Once you get that down then start making small incremental changes.

Well, I have the consistency and the line down. I need to work on my braking points again, now with new rotors, that will change. My last time out (2nd trackday) I was at a consistent 1:30 for the first half of the day and the session after lunch. Then the 5th session I was at a consistent 1:27, then the last session a consistent 1:25. By consistent I mean that the first 2 laps were 1:30(warmup), then the next 10 laps were at 1:25 with a couple thrown in with faster lap times.

The consistency is there, otherwise they would have booted my ass out of A group.

So how about those 5 second rotors now Del? They cut my lap times to a consistent 1:20. Though, they seemed to draw some negative attention in turn 7 in the form of getting passed and forced off the track...

Lots of trackday riders worry way too much about lap times. There is a wide assortment of bikes, skill sets, experience and attitudes within each group. It's not often that you can brake, accelerate and run the line of choice at every corner for entire lap, let alone multiple laps.

The are a number of things to work on instead of lap times. Focusing on lap times sometimes leads trackday riders to make poor decisions, often leading to pissing off/scaring other riders, crashing, etc.

I'm thinking about having a t-shirt made with the words "Calm down. It's just a track day".

My end goal is to get lower lap times through being smoother, smarter, more consistent lines, proper braking and good solid corner speed. My issue yesterday was just that someone passed me in T7, then slammed the brakes and forced me to straighten out and go into the grass on the inside of 8. I was pretty pissed off, especially after the corner workers watched it and the guy didn't even get talked to. No apology to me either from the guy for running me off the track.

In the future let the organizers know who's riding unsafely so that we can address it.

Feel free to PM me if you have any info on the rider, or if you'd like to just talk about your day. I'm the guy you intially talked with about moving to the B group. Del tells me you looked fine out there, btw.

Smoother, smarter, more consistent lines, proper braking, good corner speed? All good things to work, and all can be done without worrying about lap times - or what the speedometer is indicating.

Agreed. Definitely agreed. I have a lap timer that I look at when I get off the track, so I don't pay attention to it while on track. I found myself getting caught in traffic too much in B to really work on anything a whole lot. I felt a whole lot more comfortable riding in A than I did in B. I could not predict lines when I was in B, but I knew what everybody was going to do in A.

Great tips and words to track by. It's best to ride 80% have fun and not worry about times or speeds. Other folks can make mistakes, have brain fade or bike issues. If you leave some comfort zone in your own head, when something comes up you can better deal with it with out crashing. Running at your limit or pushing to hard leaves no room for you to make needed adjustments. If someone gets too close and you feel the need to change your line a bit, it can to much.. the brain overloads and it's very easy to make a poor decision.

Hope you learned a lot and had a great time. I had a blast! It was fun running with you.

I'm still shopping for my 5 sec rotors.

Though I felt fast, and I appreciate all the great tips you gave me, I know I held you up. If I find some more of those rotors, I will definitely hook you up.
