| Superbiker ![]() Joined: Mar 2008 From: Seattle, WA | In the market for leathers Pretty frickin busy at work which has prevented me from doing any serious research, but here goes my list with notes I jotted down while e-researching(looking in the ~$1200 range, custom preferable): Vansons - heard good things, but cant find any solid info/pricing Barnacle Bills - heard good things, but honestly seem a little "old" looking and perhaps oriented too much to drag racing rather than road racing Helimot - quote from their website: "Bring plenty of money" = pass Z leathers - cant really remember why, but I crossed them off. Probably too pricey. Syed - on the shortlist, pricepoint ~$1200, seem like cool designs and protection Acme Moto - I would be happy to drop my money locally, but where are the prices? NJK leathers - on the shortlist, pricepoint ~$1150, seem like cool designs and protection Pilot leathers - definitely on the shortlist, , pricepoint ~$1150, seem like cool designs and protection AND they send out a fit sample to ensure that you measured correctly and are happy with the sizing. This is trez cool. RS Taichi - expensive, off-the-rack, but my experience with their gloves have convinced me they would be great leathers. Everything you hear about Taichi is all good (except pricing). Would need to try on locally (anywhere around?) Spartan leathers - designs not as nice. (thats all I had written down on this one) Bates/Kushitani - not as convincing advertising-wise, and uber expensive. I'm interested in others' opinions on these and other options. Please give valid reasons, and feel free to disagree with my assessments. Thanks in advance. Cheers, vagrant |

| WMRRA Qualifier Joined: Jul 2009 From: Corvallis, OR I Ride: 08 Hypervibrator | Vanson Got my Vanson Velocity suit in 1998...still wearing it. No issues with stitching or anything. I have not crashed on them. Took a long time and 3 suits to get my custom order right - but they kept at it, delivered an awesome suit, then said they'd never make another velocity suit for a woman! Paid $1200 for it I think but remember that was 11 years ago. I also have an off the rack Vanson jacket - also excellent quality and no issues. I've heard off the rack Vanson suits are a pretty good fit - not skinny legs like the Teknics. Racers I have known have had their Vansons for years because Vanson offers great service - you can send your leathers back for repairs and get color touch-ups. I bought a set of Cycleport Kevlar pants to go with my jacket - they are stretchy and comfy. I mailed them a pair of my jeans and they made the pants using my jeans as a guide. Motoport/Cycleport make a Kevlar suit approved for racing for $799: http://motoport.wsiefusion.net/_prod...ng_Kevlar_Suit Oh, and this is a quote from their measurement page: "IF YOU EVER CRASH, AT ANY SPEED, IN A MOTOPORT KEVLAR GARMENT (SUIT, JACKET, PANT, OR SHIRT) AND MOTOPORT CAN'T REPAIR IT, MOTOPORT WILL REPLACE THE GARMENT FOR FREE." Wow. This will be my next suit. As for Helimot...I have 2 pairs of Daytona boots which I love and never ride without. I also have had 2 sets of Held gloves - after 11 years and 2+ crashes, I'm still wearing the second pair (and able to type!). Well worth the extra $. (I think Helimot used to sell Held then started making their own). Hope this helps. I'm interested to hear what you end up getting and hearing your review. |

They are top of the line.. The PSI can be bought in roo hide or cow and can be custom designed, colors, darts, materials and all. The Gimoto is a more affordable custom fitted suit they just added to their line up. Pricing varies with each individual. Call or email Mark Bothe at http://www.acmemotowear.com/contact.html He will be in Seattle for the WMRRA round in August with trackside services. |

| Training Wheels Joined: Jul 2009 From: Lake Oswego, OR I Ride: Whatever I Can | what to wear Just my .02 - I have been riding and racing in NJK leathers the last few years. They have seen the ground more than once and my personal guru on leather protection Miriam, who works on all suits, says they are made for crashing and are really pretty HEAVY heavy duty. They aren't so easy to work on but she has done a great job over the years of helping my team mate Steve Korol and I when things go bad or alterations or adding custom logos and stuff. Anyway she feels the best suit you can buy is Dainese period. I was all set to throw down the cash and buy a PSI Suit and she basically talked me out of it. Essentially she went through a couple of suits she had on hand, she was doing alterations on,, and did a comparison between the DAINESE and the ACME Suit,, frankly there was no comparison between the two safety wise and the PSI is actually more money and you get much much less. I would recommend buying the impact safety armor from ACME it has really protected me over the years and is an exceptional product which is what we all want and need in case things go bad.. My next suit will be a Dainese custom. Please let me know if you require more details or Miriam's phone number and you can have the conversation with a non biased third party who isn't trying to sell anything to anybody and is truly objective. Good luck, Rob Last edited by dirtburch; 08-12-2009 at 10:23 PM.. |

| Endorsed Joined: Jan 2007 From: Beaverton, OR | My NJK's have served me well. I think this is season 4. Acme did some minor repairs on them before this season started. I've tested them several times. I'm the unpaid model in the picture on their site: http://www.njkleathers.com/njk_difference.php. All that said, they are a bit heavy/bulky, in my opinion. I'll probably check out the Acme suits, among others, next time around. |

We're local, go to most of the race weekends in the NW, support our suits that we sell, have a contingency program for 2010, work and repair on ALL makes of suits, even Dianese, make custom lettering and names for your existing suit, etc. We even have the ability to send back our PSi suits to the factory and have repairs done in case the damage is extensive. Usually the shipping is more costly than the repair itself. What's really cool is that all of the suits that you could buy from many of the top manufacturers are going to be pretty darn close in performance. Some aspects you're you're going to like more and some, maybe not so much, but when your get to the level of a high end Dianese, Alpinstars, or a PSi and Gimoto you're going to get a very good suit. We like what we do and we want all riders of all levels to be happy and safe with the suit they purchase. I have never "sold" a suit. I don't have to. I explain what my suits are and an educated buyer will and does understand what they see and touch. Also, PSi, Gimoto, and Dianese all source thier leather from the same tanning company in Europe. PSi is made in Czech Republik and Jakob Smrz is a sponsored rider. Gimoto is made in Milan, Italy and Luca Scassa is their rider. Top level riders, working for 2 small family owned leather companies. Thanks for reading and hope to see you at the track, riding motorcycles or talking safety gear. Cheers Mark Last edited by Trojan; 08-11-2009 at 03:07 PM.. | |

| Newbie Joined: Aug 2009 From: PDX | a few things about Acme Motowear and PSI....... there are lots of manufacturers these days lots of variety to choose from deals to be had cool stuff to spend your money on neat-o colors value to $$ ratios to be considered quality consistency customer service fit finish durability etc.... Its true that I am an Acme sponsored rider but the real question is would I ride for them even if I wasn't? Would I buy another PSI suit when the time comes? The answer to that would certainly be yes. For nearly 20 years my job has revolved around two things and two things only. Quality Customer Service And I know both when I see them. PSI suits The quality and fit is amazing. Truly amazing Mark and Elaine ( Acme ) took the time to ensure that the suit I was buying was exactly to spec and that the fit would be perfect. And it was cool to support local business as well as fellow riders. You wanna buy a suit from a salesperson or someone who actually races and trackdays what they sell? I do. Elaine being a professional designer and full of all around coolness, mocked up several different layouts of how my suit might look based on what my ideas were. Mark got all the proper measurements and explained every possible option and things we might do to make the suit not only awesome but functional and durable. Not to mention the list of things that can be done is phenomenal as well as executed flawlessly. If you know anything about the Bothe's, you know that they are all about the best customer service and their attention to detail is remarkable. Mark really knows a good blueberry pie too so if you need that sort of information, you can get the 411 on that too. I have seen my friends order suits from all kinds of places. And had a very mixed bag of experiences. My suit came in a VERY timely manner ( fast I thought ) especially compared to places that were way closer and even " local ". Pulled it out of the box, through it on and there ya go. Perfect. No surprises or what ifs. And it doesnt take a trained eye to see that these suits are built right. You only get that from not only a quality manufacturer and distributors that know their business as well as understand the needs of their customers. Period Im into my 3rd year of racing and trackdays with my PSI suit. Even with a few crashes under my belt, the thing just keeps giving me good protection and is super comfy. It never really broke in because it didnt need it. Remember When you go to buy a bike, you also are " buying " the owner or the shop. Same goes here. So give them a serious look-see. You wont be disappointed. D |

The two who work there are pretty nice and very, very knowledgeable. Call Insurrection at 206-782-5752. They also have an Arlen Ness used suit, I believe, for sale. It's about a large size. |
