| Chicken Strips Joined: May 2008 From: Shelton, WA (little Arkansas) I Ride: like a boss. | I had a blast out there. Next time though I think I'll try to get around and try to meet more of you instead of being the socially awkward penguin I was. Since it was my first time out I was a little overwhelmed and was focusing more on the tasks at hand. I did find that I learned a LOT though. I took a lot of notes and hope to have a more clear plan for the next time. As for the actual track time, it was simply amazing. I may not have been fast, my lines looked like an old family circle cartoon, and my braking points were in the next county, but I never once felt uncomfortable or out of place. Next track day I feel that I'll be able to make huge improvements since I'll be able to focus on specifics vs trying to take it all in at once (being overwhelmed...). All in all an A+ experience. And thanks again to Norm (shelbyguy) for helping get my bikes to the track. It was greatly appreciated. |

| Pit Crew | Thursday was my first time ever on a track; it was supposed to have been my first track day with mikefsu; and it also happened to fall on the date of the Celebration of Life his family held for him in Florida. This combo made for an intense day. I didn’t decide to ride until noon the day before. Redliter, Willow and Buz were amazing and helped me with all the logistics: rearranging the bikes in the trailer to fit mine, prepping it, and even taking it to the tech inspection. Thursday morning, I took one of the instructors aside to explain my situation. I told him to please let me know if I was riding unsafely, that I’d be happy to leave the track if they felt I was putting other riders in danger. Getting on my bike and riding out to the first session probably counts among the hardest things I’ve ever done. I was petrified, among a jumble of other emotions. But each time I came around to the front straight, my friends were there cheering, which was both embarrassing and heartening. ![]() The control riders led us around the track at a sedate pace, but on the second lap, I still managed to get caught off-guard by a right hander that was tighter than expected. It wasn’t a big deal – just had to lean a bit more, but that’s when I told myself, “Your job today is to get yourself around this track safely.” And that was my mantra for the rest of the day. Back at the pits after the first session, one of the instructors stopped by. “I noticed that you were pretty stiff out there,” he said. No arguments here! Don’t think I could have felt stiffer. Throughout the day, each session became a little easier, and I started to relax a bit, though I never entirely got over feeling bad for holding up the other riders. At the speeds I was going, I joked that I would have bumped myself down to a “level 0” if it was available! My last session was amazing. It felt like I had the track to myself for several laps, and I finally felt warm and started to have some fun. Coming around the carousel, there was this gorgeous golden afternoon light reflecting off the track. As I glided around the curve, I felt Mike with me. It was beautiful. I wanted to say a huge thank you to OPRT. Without exception, the staff and control riders were sensitive, supportive and encouraging. Thank you to the control riders who took me around (and around and around!) the track and stopped by off the track to give me tips. Thank you, Jim, for the instruction and the 2-up ride. Thank you to my friends and to everyone who stopped by to say hi. You all contributed to making it a fantastic day. And…for those track junkies out there, I must admit that I spent Friday wishing that I was back at the track. Caught myself thinking, “Now, if only I could start a track day from the point I ended the last one…it was just starting to get good!” As you can tell, I’ll be back. Sorry for the long post! Got to hang out with Brad, Mark, Mike, and Candiya. Enjoyed some Birthday cake and had a sugar crash which much preferred over real ones! Was thinking about Mikefsu through out the day wishing he was here to enjoy the fun. I know he was there in spirit and it meant alot to me to ride with Brad, Mark, and Mike during the last two sessions. I often reflect how lucky am I am to throw a leg over a bike and enjoy a hobby I really love, surrounded by like individuals that enjoy the same hobby and know what it's like to navigate a machine and exercise the skills that I'm always learning and refinning. As usual, it's worth what you paid for it but you were looking good out there, hopefully you don't get shipped off to the dessert and can get in some more days next summer. |
