Novice track day question
This may have been asked, so forgive me if it has, but how many novices are planning on hitting up the first 2 Fast and Adrenaline Freaks track days before the 31st? And how many novices plan on doing every track day available? Maybe I was a track whore last year, but work won't let me have the days off this year, so I'm getting a sinking feeling that I can't hit the track besides the weekends. How much will this effect racing for me?

I was with you this past Saturday. I can't say I'm looking forward to you passing me but I'd be content if you did it in such a way as I can follow you and learn from your form. You were the person talking about running 1:35's on an SV, correct?

I don't know about every track day, but I'm really chomping at the bit to get out there. If the weather permits, I plan to take advantage of the Adrenaline Freaks day right before the race day. I have a new bike that I've only tried out at Thunder Hill and I'm interested in seeing how well I can do on it on a familiar track.

Like you, days off from work is my primary obstacle to track time. Regardless, I'm planning on at least one track day a month. Otherwise, I figure I'll be too stale and stiff on the bike to race.

Track days are a nice relaxed way to get track time without the pressure of a race schedule.

I would try to call in sick at least a couple of times

But all in all you can get through the season just fine without any track days.

many very fast racers rarely show up for track days.

Personally, I enjoy the relaxed atmopshere of a track day alot so I go as much as possible.

lol Um no I wish!! Try 1:45! There is a girl on an Sv doing 1:35?! Introduce me! Heck, are you telling me there are ANY SV's in novice doing 1:35?? I've got my work cut out! I think I can make 1 track day per month, but I was really hoping for more. At least I won't be the only one. And now I'm out of a street bike as well, but I've heard it hinders, and doesn't help your track improvement.

Oh, if it was only that easy. I live where I work. So they'd know something was up when I left with my bike!

Some of us very slow racers also show up rarely for track days. Maybe that's why we're slow. I just can't afford them right now, so I just go to the races and do what I can while having fun at the back of the pack.

Maybe. The riding guidelines for street riding and track riding don't exactly mesh. But one of my big fears is riding in the rain. If its going to be wet, I'm not certain I'll show up for the race, much less the preceeding track day. I'm hoping riding my street bike will help with that. My experience with riding improvement is 99% mental. If you can just convince your head that you can do it, getting the bike to do it is trivial.

I don't think there are any SV's doing '35's at Pacific. I'll be at the March 21st opener with 2FAST as an on-track instructor. My normal schedule with 2FAST is to instruct the 100 level and play in the 300. I'll hook up with any new racer and go over anything you want out there. Just come ask me, I'm usually pitted behind the class room canopy, I'll be wearing black and silver Taichi leathers with an orange instructor vest.

Hi, my name's Andrew and I'm a track-a-holic (and a novice #800). I'm signed up for 25+ trackdays this year because each time I go out there I learn something new, build more endurance, find a better line, experiment with body positioning & brake technique, or just find a suspension setting that flat out works better for me. I'm a firm believer in perfect practice makes perfect. Just going out there occasionally (and sucking) isn't practice. I'm not spending all this money to get out there and ride slow/sloppy/poorly.

I'll be @ AF on 3/30 fo damn sho'!

Well, that makes me feel better. Aren't novices still suppose to be in 200? Or does it just depend on your times? I think in AF you have to run 200 regardless.

Well as Live4thekill just pointed out, there are some people who are. I wish I could..... work is the first issue, then money. But without work there would be no money, so I guess it's good I can't take all the days off. I just got done writing down all the 2 Fast, Adrenaline Freaks, NESBA and Sully track days. In all, there doesn't look like that many considering. I won't have a street bike, so how else will I get my kicks?

And I don't think there are many if any track days for only $150. :(

Yea what's up with that???? I wrote those down too. But you have to pay your $75 membership fee, and some of their days are $180. Why is that?? 2 Fast are $179, and AF are $165-$175...

I can't see how people can afford to hit up 10 track days (over $1500 just in track fees, not to mention all of the rest of the expenses, probably causing that number to double) let alone 20+ in one season. Big money.

20+ track days, damn, what's that runnin' folks (assuming you're not one of the guys gettin' "good guyed" in on the track all season), as far as an estimated total for all related expenses??? Something like $6000, give or take a grand?, probably not even including gear costs (assuming people already have all the necessary gear??)

I guess that means if you're just getting into it, and you plan to do 20+ track days, you better be ready to drop what... like 9 or 10 Gs?? Holy track whore Batman!! Rich man's sport, fo' sho'.

Lot o' money to spend on hobby stuff over a six month period.

I guess I'm one of the "working poor".

No wife, no kids, no house. My rent is $800/month. That's how. Any I have no f*cking idea how others who make less than me spend MORE than me each year. And you can easily spend $15-20K/year on it being cheap.

Damn dude, that crazy, but kinda what I thought too though.

I suppose if I:

1 Kept my wife from buying anything, ever.

2 Sold her bike and our two cars

3 Got rid of the pets

4 Moved into a studio apartment

5 Convinced my wife to ride the bus to work while I ride my bike to work.

6 Made her work more overtime, so I could take more days off to hit the
track.

7 Started eating Top Ramen every meal of the day.

8 Cancelled my internet and cable TV.

9 Sold all my guns.

10 And sold weed on the side......

I might be able to swing it..... for 1 season.

A very fast racer once told me "I live in a studio apartment and don't buy new clothes for myself." That about sums it up.

With 2FAST, you ride in what ever level your riding skills are safest in. If you start out-riding the level your in and want to advance, you approach an instructor to follow you and hopefully advance you to the next level. I've advanced every novice that's approached me with one exception, he actually wanted to go back into the 200 level, I can respect that, it shows me that pride comes last and skill knowledge first. There's a couple of female instructors that are awesome, Brenda Wertman is probably the best. I'd be happy to follow you around for a few laps if you like. The best thing to do is follow a few different instructors, take something from each one and apply what works best for you.

AF requires Novice in 2 because 1 is for white place racers only.

I'm not going to start the whole debate on the membership fee but there is value add for the membership fee if you do more than one trackday a year with them. And as you can see, its only $125 for a weekday track day. So, you almost make the $75 back right there. Not to mention crash insurance, discounts through sponsors, and a few other things.

We are lucky to have 3 great track companies (2-Fast, NESBA, AF).

lol Good luck with that!! Your wife has a bike? Get her on the track!!! I'd say taking away her bike would be the toughest on that list, if she is anything like me.

I'd love the help!! I believe I've ridden with Brenda before, and yea she's cool! I do know what you mean about taking things from each person you follow (with more skill then yourself). Seems like almost every racers line is a little different, give or take a few feet, but every advice I get I try to take in and see how I can make it work for myself. Thanks for all the advice!

And to end on a happy note, I just signed up for 2 Fast and Adrenaline Freaks this month since work is letting me have only those 2 days off!!!!! I'm so pumped!! See you guys out there! :D

Right on, we'll have a great time regardless of the weather, it may even be dry for us. I'll show you some lines that your SV will love, I call 'em mind-bender lines, your mind says they won't work, but the moves you put on your opposition does. With the times you were turning in the dry, I doubt we'll stay in 100 for long, we can advance anytime we need to. Looking forward to it.

Curiosity question. Were you running the damping rod forks or did you do a cartridge conversion on them?
