Holy crap!?!? How can a transponder cost more than a Power Commander?!

Easy, no economy of scale. How many transponders do you think they sell a year vs. how many PCIIIs...

Speaking from the perspective of someone that has already gone through this transition with a club (CMRA circa 2004ish), the AMB stuff is really worth the money. Yes, it's not cheap, but motorcycle road racing isn't a cheap sport. This is about the cost of one set of tires. Aside from some class structure stuff, you guys can race for much less than most of the rest of the country (transportation and hotel costs add up visiting tracks up to 500 miles away two or four times per year).

Id Also STRONGLY recommend getting the rechargeable units. The wired units add one more thing to break and fly off in a major crash.

Nico : have you guys addressed mounting options? The front fork worked great. Its one of the most protective locations for the (expensive!) transponder.

I do, they won't work reliably on a motorcycle.

Yeah, its only 300 miles for some of us to attend race weekends in seattle. Lots cheaper.

I bought a used Transponder a few years back. All you have to do is have the previous owner unregister it and your good to go and get registered.

The recommended location is the front fork tube. This location is often required per the clubs rulebook.

I have heard of the AMB emergency rocket launcher location... In the event of a close race, just shoot your amb ahead of the competition!

Sure is. Cali and Texas run two more race weekends than WMRRA too.

I'll bet you're also a serious outlier in the population of WMRRA. What % of the club is from the Seattle area?

You don't have to spend the money to practice 10 different track configurations/setups to be competitive.

Racing in Seattle isn't cheap, no road racing is, but the financial burden to run as a mid-pack expert is less, by a chunk of change, than other comparable clubs.

Fork tube FTW.

Play with using hose Clamps. I vaguely remember something about proximity to ferris metal, but it's been awhile.

Buttonwillow and Thunderhill aren't that far (THill is closer than SRP AFAIR and Buttonwillow about as far as SRP) and Infineon is almost as close to SF as Pacific to Seattle.

Most people who race with AFM live in the Bay Area, not in Seattle

Doesn't that video just get the juicies flowing? Looks like the track has some point and shot corners along with some flowing ones and a couple of places your are really gonna have to be able to change direction quickly with the bike.

Can't wait!

You still have to factor in traffic. Thunder Hill is about 4-5 hours from the South Bay Area. Button Willow is about the same. Infenion is a good 3 hours from the same place (mostly due to traffic).

Still not sure why with 4 tracks in the area (yes include ORP now) (in the US) there are two motorcycle racing clubs when it should really just be one with a common set of rules.

Traffic? It's not LA, there's no traffic from SF to wine country at 6AM on Saturday morning. May hit a few spots on the way back in the evening, but not that likely and there's two-person carpool in most of the places that can be bad.

You seriously typed that? Really?

Everytime I've been down there are various times of the day I was glad I was on a motorcycle or I'd be stuck in traffic. Actually last year I did go down with my motorhome and trailer...only got stuck in a few traffic jams in the East Bay.

Also in California if you are towing a trailer you are not allowed in the carpool lanes. This is something they actually enforce. Since most people tow a trailer to the track...this puts them out of the carpool lanes.

How much time have you spent in the Bay Area?

Some distance numbers

San Jose to Buttonwillow

San Jose to Thunder Hill
171mi

San Jose to Infineon
95mi

If you are comparing costs, don't forget that finding a place to live will cost you a ridiculous amount. Twice that if you want enough room to store a trailer. Oh yeah, and tolls, and state tax.

Don't forget, San Jose is the 'big city' part of the South Bay. The outlying areas are where you will be finding homes etc. Add more mileage for that.

And most of the Bay Area (SF, Oakland) is a 3 person carpool.

Ok, enough of this BS - driving to the tracks in NorCal is pretty close to what we've got here between Pacific, SRP and Portland. That's all I have to say on the subject.

And yea, I'll probably be missing one WMRRA round due to this AMB deal, but oh well at least there's hope I won't need to run around looking for people who can sign a paper stating that I finished the race in front of them ever again.

It still happens, just not as often...usually because you forget to install the transponder on your bike.

They come with a mounting bracket that is designed to be zip-tied to the fork tube...works great.

There are other reasons why it'll happen. The reason you had to do it this year is cause your transponder was busted and you never got it fixed.

Come on south with me and the gang in April to Vegas. It's gonna be close to the perfect time of year to ride there.

Talked to the rep today.

If you have a used one you can use it under the previous owner's name IF you got his/her login and password information for mylaps.com. There is no registry-re-title, nor did it sound like there would be one in the near future.

The other option is using it as-is, not using mylaps.com. Will still record your lap times for whatever WMMRA chooses to post on the board.

The other option is to trade it in for a 40% discount on a new one (registered in your name) and free shipping. That ran $252.

Where is the loop at Pacific? Any bike over 160 mph at the loop will have problems registering with the system according to the website.

Last I checked the wire is located here (look for two white lines in picture. this is Eli on a 600 several years ago. the speedo is accurate. remember he's not in a draft nor on a bigger bike). Now I'm not in the loop (no pun intended) but the plans might not have this loop in use but another one that has to be installed (unless it has been done since the last race weekend of this year)

Anybody know how the transponder works? I do.

Oh wait..there is also another loop coming out the bus stop...but sometimes people are still in a massive wheelie when they cross it. Not something normal but still an issue as it brings the transponder more than 4' off the ground.

There is another loop near the grand stands - well past the typical wheelie zone. Not sure if that's it though.
