Here is my Supermoto, '03 CRF450R, at Laguna Seca in '03. I raced the first AMA Pro Supermoto, but had to retire later that year for injuries. I didn't make the main, but did beat some trick DRZ ridden by a guy named Schwantz in one heat (OK, he crashed). The CRF is now my trail bike. It was stock except for the Thunder Alley pipe, 17" wheels, and the Rekluse auto clutch.

I also got to crew for the factory Husaberg team at the Virginia race that year. Their rider was Ivan Lazzerini, a former Italian MXer who was very quick. He was top qualifier in the open class, but it rained out for 2 days and he had to fly back for a world championship round before the mains took place. Wild bike, check out the 1/4" Aluminum plates bracing the frame in front and the 19T front sprocket!? They had to cut a groove in the swingarm to let the sprocket teeth pass through it!? It was stupid fast too, 700cc+.

Here it is, if KTM can have a heavy 990 SM, then the CITYX from Buell should do just fine. Come ride the mud and fire roads with me sometime The pics never load from home, look left its in my signature box.

The 990 SM isn't a true supermoto, it's just styled like one. The CityX is not a supermoto at all, and doesn't even pretend to be one. It's a naked street bike.

Definitely worth a trip down to Silverdale to see a CityX try to hang with a real SM on fireroads.

Geez is ANYTHING that doesn't have a fairing considered a "supermoto" these days?

It's really sad that the supermoto "styling" trend seems to be taking off, yet nobody (except Yamaha) is coming out with any new true supermotos.

Agree with you on the first three points, but as per sumo "styling" being a sad reality, I'm not so sure. I think that there's a good chance that increasing popularity of sumo styling will get more people interested in sumo, which will eventually get more people interested in sumo bikes.

The original Ducati Monster 900 is not really much of a streetfighter, but it certainly popularized the market and opened the door for a lot of other, more serious naked street bikes.

I see your point, but I fear SMs will just get "dumbed down" like SUV's have. All the posers wanted the rugged, offroad look of the (old school) SUVs, but didn't want the rugged ride and lack of creature comforts etc. So now we have the current crop of fully pimped out poser SUVs that are basically overgrown luxury cars and can't handle much more than a gravel road, which they never see anyway. And with very few exceptions, you really can't find rugged offroad capable SUVs anymore, and they cost an arm and a leg.

So the masses that don't get what supermoto is really about (as evidenced on this very forum) and don't want something as focused as a supermoto, but want the looks and style of one, will gravitate towards the pseudo-tards. Just look at all the people drooling over the Hypermotard (which isn't a true motard) that were never interested in supermotos before. So I fear this is where Big Four will go, instead of making true street-worthy tards out of their offroad bikes.

Finally got some recent pics. Jayson161 actually has my DRZ right now as I left it in WA, but he took a few pictures of it this morning, which hasn't been done in almost a year!

That would be the Clark 4.3 gallon tank. Thats one of the smaller after market tanks too. I think it's IMS that makes a 7 gallon main tank and a 3 gallon under seat tank to match!

What tires are those? Are they better for on road, fire trail type riding? These friggin dunlops are so cold blooded its not even funny.. I can't wait for them to dissappear. Seriously need to look into some different tread.

Same tire as Danny is running, and Pete. Distanzias. Supposely work pretty well for fireroads and a little further off the path, just really not that great for mud. I personally just put them on and haven't had the opportunity to use them yet. However, those stockers are garbage in my oppinion, I couldn't wait to get ride of them. These tires to would really well for me.
