New Rider Tips -- I got T-boned by a rider sunday and it hurts...
The rider appearently doesn't understand off road edicate.

For noobs:

If you are riding a trail and meet another group going the other direction.

You hold up your hand to and raise your fingers to indicate how many riders are behind you.

The other rider will do the same.

If you are the last rider you hold up a closed fist to inidicate that there are no more riders with you on the trail.

The last rider of the oncoming group will do the same.

For noobs:

The leader should know the way.

Keep an eye out for the guy in front and behind. In case they crash badly.

Know how many are in your group.

Know how many are behind you.

Always wait for the rider behind you at intersections so they don't get lost.

If they don't show for a long long while wait a little more for your group to return to you. In any case make sure top backtrack to find out what happened to the rider, they may be injured and need help.

The guy that T-boned me appearently didn't know what 3 fingers in the air meant. I was tail draggin behind the fast guys, and waiting for the slower riders at intersections. Once I spotted the next rider I would tear off figuring that any rider coming would be extra cautious becuse the guys in front of me were exprienced fast riders whom I know would signal correctly. I wasn't too worried about oncoming traffic and I was flyin pretty good.

The dude got the signal but just chose to ignore it and later he T-boned me.

I'm slightly injured but it could have been really bad.

Anyone got other reccomendations for the noobies?

So you got t-boned by an oncoming rider?

In any case that sucks and gots to be painful! Where were you?

Oh and my piece of advice...ride faster and stay up with the faster guy.

Rowlex that reminds me.

One piece of advice to everyone. Before you head out onto the trails, if there are people inthe group you have never ridden with before stop for a moment and explain how things will be run. Stopping at intersections for the guy behind, indicating the number of riders behind (if there are more than 5 then just put up all finger on your left hand...don't use both hands. ), etc. This makes the ride go WAY smoother.

i'll add some tip/advice: watch out for stumps, even with MX boots, they will hurt. Try not to fall in deep puddles either. roosting your riding buddies only gets more mudd/dirt/rocks directed at you.

newb advise-

when your w/ 1 or more and you are struggling, or cant make the obsticle, swallow your pride(its still new anyway) and let 1 a better/experianced rider get your bike thru, saves everyones time and dont put you in a situation to hurt yourself or the bike and your off w/ the day (till the next challenge...which could just around the next turn

and watch running over just the ends of sticks and logs, they're know to whip up and smack ya

I really wish they would post these kinds of things at ALL of the trail heads! I am amazed by how many people think I am giving them the peace sign and they just look at me funny as I go by.

It would almost be neat to build some sort of LED number board to mount on the front number plate to let other riders know how many are behind you. Maybe not, this would probably just cause more confusion than anything else.

Maybe we just need to ban all quads from any form of trail system. They seem to be the worst offenders anyway.

Dude if you just get more than a mile from the parking lot you wont run into to many of them anyway. But you already knew that. Plus high dollar helmets and proper gear are like kryptonite to wheel chair riders.

I easily kept up, The front guy was smart and riding fast but cautiosly due to the massive traffic,

Anyway the proper thing to do is wait for the slower guys at the intersections, besides I'm old and out of shape, it allowed me breather time.

Tahuya, back 40, single track. Lost in the woods.

I was just ribbing yeah.

Tahuya is just a freaking nightmare. I don't have any plans to go back except on a weekday and if I'm really really desperate.

I've ridden tahuya the last 2 saturdays and it has been perfect, traffic has been pretty light each time. We show up afternoon tho.

Its not just the traffic. The trails don't really do it for me.

ha ha.. sounds like the classic tahuya story..

I'm not a huge fan of tahuya either.. its dusty as shit in the summer and you can't see.. and in the winter (when everywhere else has 10ft of show) tahuya is like a lake.. you end up riding mass puddles and once in a while hit a patch of actual trail.

then there's the quads.. and I think its the spot everyone goes to ride for the 1st time.. so you have fast guys, quads and newbs.. with wide trails that let you rip along pretty good..

Oh well I'll crash at almost any riding area.

this was a good one from tahuya:

As a complete dirt nOOb, where do you find out about things like you mentioned? I don't know squat about riding in the dirt just yet.

Actually there wasn't any challenging trails there when I went last.

Nor is it a place to haul due to the traffic.

What's wrong with me not liking Tahuya? There are places I'm sure you don't like that I'd like and I wouldn't give you a hard time.

for newbs: dont accelerate hard while in apuddle...you dont know what is under there and can easily catch and slide your back tire accross a log or root and do kind of a highsideish....no fun and can hurt really bad...or dunk you in the puddle and have your buddies point and laugh
