What do you guys think it's worth?
I went to look at a salvaged 2001 blue ex500 today...

It had a hole in the water pump cover, scratches here and there (both mirrors, right side handle bars, rear cowling, front cowling), one cracked front turn signal, one falling off hanging front turn signal. All stock looking plastics. Seat was fine, rear cowling was loose (broken tab?). Rear brake pedal was bent(possibly straightenable)

The bike is Running, but not test ride-able on account of the hole in the pump. Straight lookin frame, straight forks (no leaks). Cant say much for the brakes on account of I couldn't ride it. Stock exhaust pipe, not much rust on the bike anywhere at all.
Tires were good, lines seemed good, cables ok, and brake/clutch fluids were good. Didn't bother checkin the oil.

After a bit of negotiating I got the seller to $1600 including tax which works out to about $1450 before tax, do you guys think it's worth getting into, as I would have to pay a minimum $300 (including inspection) more to get this thing on the road.

Bike is located in East Vancouver BC and the seller says he wants to repair it and ask $2200

Do you think it would be a worth while purchase after all is said and done or should I move on in my search?

any other suggestions?

thanks a lot

If it were me I would move on with the search. Things you mentioned
are only the visible problems. Did it overheat when the water pump went.
There must be other bikes in your area that are in better shape.
Keep an eye out on craigslist. Take your time and find the right bike.

That's a good point, It's just hard to find a good bike under $1500 in BC, I might go back in a few weeks when the guy has it fixed up and have a test ride, but there's no way I'm paying $2200 for a salvaged ex500...

If anyone has any affordable newb friendly bikes for sale feel free to let me know

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Another question I have is, if a bike is imported from the states to Canada what's the cost to have it inspected?

To me this bike is MAX $1000. If it was in really good shape, decent tires, good chain and sprockets, well maintained I would guess around $2200

You can walk into a suzuki dealer in greater Vancouver and buy a brand new GS500F (full fairing nice looking one), that is ten years newer with a full factory warranty for $4200.

When I was reading this it sounded exactly like the bike my buddy bought(new rider as well) I think he paid $600 for it, it was newer and not salvage. He's asking too much for the bike and you will dump a lot of money into it(that is if you want it back to shinny new) Its carburated as well, which I dont think is very appealing. I wonder how long its been sitting too. I really think you can do better.

coming from a guy who owns an ex500, move on, if they want $2200 after the rebuild, you can find a more sporty bike for just as much. The bike you are looking at is the exact same tech as my 1987 bike... i.e. not very good

I Ride: A ZX14 in the rain...., OMG!!
I was given a running, complete ex500. After I put tires and a battery in it, I had overspent its worth imo. I gave it to my son. Uncomfortable bike, but fun.
You can do much better with $2200. Go shopping. You dont need a outdated, but not vintage, basket case.

a perfect condition ex500 is only worth $800-1500. take about half away for the salvage title. motorcycles are cheap, keep looking.

I hear what your saying, unfortunately I just can't justify spending $4200 on a bike right now, thanks for the suggestion tho

Carbureted really isn't a huge deal for me, but i'm kinda nervous about how long it's been sitting too... if you ever see another for around $600 hit me up

I'm really not looking for anything too much more sporty, I definitely don't think it's worth the 2200 post rebuild after either tho. If ur ever selling that 87 feel free to drop me a line, I'd be happy to rid you of it's crappy tech

If you want you can always give your next one to me What makes you say the bikes uncomfortable?

Even if you got the bike for free, it would probably cost you more to bring it back
to reasonable shape than it's worth.

Wait over the winter, save some more money, and buy an sv650. Ninja 500's
and Suzuki Gs500's are junk by comparison. Outdated boat anchors.

That bike is a dog, even in good shape. It's a $500. "Rat Bike" project!

If ya want, PM me as I've imported a few bikes from stateside and I enjoy just going and looking at bikes even if I'm not buying.

Have you thought about a dual sport 650/400 single? Lots of fun, learn to ride on dirt and they don't mind being treated roughly.

Yup! I don't care what my financial condition is, I allways can afford a dual purpose thumper to get me around and still be scaring myself silly if I want to!

The most underated bikes going, especially for a newb. Throw the usual bark busters, skid plate and case guards on it and you can dump it all you want!!!
