Are_Six, you can consider me a fellow traveler, a communist sympathizer... whatever you will. My girlfriend is a member of the CPC, and so is my sister-in-law. And like any government, the CPC gets a lot of complaints. But you can't simply say that the Chinese people aren't free. What's your definition of freedom? Does anyone wanna bring up the helmet law? (yeah, if you didn't guess, it doesn't exist in China). How about traffic laws? (They are merely guidelines... and rarely followed and never enforced). And alcohol laws... well, they don't tolerate drunk driving, which should be refreshing to most of us. The first offense for drunk driving is a very steep penalty... chronic repeat offenders can actually face capital punishment if their offense is severe enough. But, for fucks sake, open bar is quite common. I'm going to miss unlimited drinks at the bar. Jesus, the bars love to give alcohol away. And having the freedom -- having the trust of the law enforcement -- to open a beer and take it wherever the hell I damn well please is quite refreshing. Imagine walking into a supermarket and buying three 24 oz bottles of beer. Now imagine the clerk asking how many you would like opened. Then imagine walking out of the store, onto the street, onto a bus, off the bus, and then into a park with an open bottle of beer and a couple more in your pack. Quite brilliant. Meanwhile, I live in the land of misconceptions and horrors around every corner. ![]() |
