Everett to Seattle Commute
So my commute will be changing next month and I will have to start driving from Lake Stevens to the south end Seattle. New gig is off Marginal Way, just north of Boeing Seattle.

Is anyone doing this commute on their bike that has any info or advice on route and so forth? I think the express lanes will be an option. Most likely when the weather turns I will jump on the Sounder train.

Leave early coming and going. Mornings don't look to bad but afternoons look so shitty going north. Even using the carpool lane. I live in West Seattle and drive to Everett. Can I trade jobs with you? If I were you I would be taking 99 from 85th south to East Marginal. Then do the same thing in the afternoon but reverse. Screw driving right through down town.

Express lanes -and I think the direct lanes south are open in the mornings- take the Georgetown exit.

A good heads up before leaving:

I Ride: faster than I should, but slower than you.
I do the commute each morning from Mountlake Terrace to downtown via the express lanes.

Timing definitely matters. If you can manage to hit the express lanes after 8:30 you'll be much better off because it'll still get bottled up. Pay attention to the area after the Mercer Street exit. There are a two downtown exits in the right two lanes; the third (fourth?) lane over is for folks merging back onto I-5 and will back up for a long ways. The left lane is open to HOV, but there are a lot of folks jockeying around trying to sneak around this long line and busting over from left to right to hit the downtown exits. It can easily be the most chaotic part of the commute - keep your head up and stay out of blind spots for sure.

If your still commuting when the rains come back, watch out on the express lanes. There is an area in the tunnel that is open and water pours down like a waterfall. It only affects one lane but I don't recall which one. It's been a lot of years since I did that commute. I'm sure someone else on here knows what I'm talking about.

What time you are commuting is the biggest thing. I did that run, to CloverPark which isn't too far off Marginal. I started at 6am, so was pretty light traffic, still better part of 45 minutes or so. Still always got off at 85th and did 99 the rest of the way, going thru downtown on 5 sucks no matter what time it is. Sounder is great when it rains, just be sure to match it up with a bus, cause you got a ways to go after the last train stop at King St.

From Everett south to the michigan street exit is a mainline only route. under the convention center stay to the right at the I-90 exit and bypass the wretched so called express lane parking lot.

I wouldnt advise using the express lanes on your route. they bottleneck into one lane where it merges back to I-5. Horrible.

I drive this same route daily in a 1 ton cube van.
But I go from Kent to Everett, Mukilteo to ballard & south seattle and back to kent all in 3-1/2 to 4 hours or so.

Like a said, stay on the mainline, to the right on the bridge at 45th street (u-dist avoids most of the backup at 520) then zip over to the left after 520 and stay in the fast lane until convention center then over to the wall on the right avoiding the merge.

Be at speed limit around 145th st. Bigtime speed trap.

If your taking 520, be extremely careful. The middle lane right now is really bad with grooved pavement with no warning time. There is also a horrible lip on the HOV lane side that is unfinished.
