I reported it to WSP tonight via email. I didn't call it in though. It's a constant stream of trucks causing this problem, so my hope is that the loose-load report form will help this time (it hasn't in the past).

I was wondering where all the gravel and rocks came from, I work right off 202 and E.lake, our drive way has 2 or 3 large rocks and gravel appear daily, I have almost spilled my bike there at the enterance to our complex. Oh yeah, I have witnessed there drivers yelling at people, flipping off people for not letting them over, etc, they don't give a shit, obviously they are a low class company with no regard for others.

Good work on this!

Drives me crazy that most of those trucks have a fricking roll over cover that would keep most of that crap off the road and off car windshields. But they don't take the 2 minutes to slide the stupid thing backwards.

WSP does not pull these guys over, but if you have something in your truck with-out 45 tie downs you get pulled over and get a ticket, because of that law they came up with after the drunk chick got hurt

So very much this.

Tarping is required in Oregon for all "sifting" loads, but the fuckers never do it. Some even go so far as to put little non-legally-binding signs on the back of their dumpers that say they aren't liable for broken windshields. Yes you fucking are, you jackass. Tarp your damn load!

Very well-written and well-executed, I'm glad you were able to do this in the way you did.

Now, one thing that pisses me off, is that semi/dump-truck drives don't like being cut off or slowed down on the freeway... yet they're okay with running the risk of potentially killing a motorcyclist behind them because of something that takes an extra 2 minutes to secure?

I was behind one yesterday, going East on 132nd in South Everett/Mill Creek area with huge chunks of broken concrete in the back. Although those are less likely to come out from wind, I don't want to imagine the damage a 20lb+ piece of concrete would to a car, motorcycle, or bicyclist if it hit a bump wrong..... There was a fair amount of 'dust' coming out, but from that particular truck, nothing like large gravel (of course, I wasn't about to follow it for miles on my motorcycle, either...).

Jeff, thank you for your effort on this serious topic, well done. I'll alert my riding friends to your post and myself will report such situations.

BTW, the diagram on the WSP website suggests that the 6" of freeboard apply to the sides, not the top of the load, which can potentially be higher than the tailgate/sideboards. Thus the rule does not guarantee that debris won't fly off the top of the pile:



Also, the wording at http://www.wsp.wa.gov/traveler/loadloss.htm states:
If the load is a type of material that will be blown from the vehicle while the vehicle is in motion, then that type of load shall be covered to prevent this from occurring.

which to me sounds like a recommendation rather than an enforceable law. Should "shall" be replaced with "must"?

I've never had the joy of flying gravel yet , but I've had my share of winding up behind trucks and trailers large and small hauling beauty bark out by the Roy Y.
No one ever seems to cover the load and it goes out everywhere. I never seem to be able to pull over fast enough. That crap gets in everything :(
