I Ride: 2000 GSX-R 750
new motor?
I know I'm gonna get flamed. And some people's "solution" to the current problem is gonna be "get a fuel injected bike." But I am trying to fix this one.

Got the carbs done. Got them reassembled and put back on the bike,. The shop finished all the work today. Went to fire up the bike, and the motor has no compression. What could cause that? I'm hoping maybe they were just in a hurry to get my bike back to me and forgot to hook up a hose somewhere. But they are doing a compression test in the morning when they open. Is it fixable if the engine has no compression?

On the likely chance that I need to replace the motor, does anyone know where I can get a R6 motor to do a motor swap? Maybe someone on here has an R6 parts bike that they would sell me the motor from? Or has an idea on where I can get a reliable used motor.

I really don't want any asshole-ish, smartass responses right now. (I know I'm gonna get them anyway). I'm frustrated and having been waiting for a week and a half for them to finish my bike so I can go riding, just to find out I have to deal with this problem now. So if you can't be helpful, please keep it to yourself for now.

Rings sticking can cause a sudden no start/no compression condition. Its not an end of the world scenario, but as with many things, there will be dirty hands on this one.

That fucker ran when you took it in. It better damn well run when you leave on THEIR dime. Don't let them get away with fucking up your bike and charging you for it.

I'm guessing there is a starter gear stripped or loose. The whine is just the starter. For a real test, put your hand by the exhaust pipe and feel for pulses. Almost guarantee it's a starter issue.

why didn't you take it to Adrian at ShinySideUp or Faron at Gixxertek?

Couldn't get ahold of ShinySideUp. Tried calling a few times and got no return call. And I couldn't get the bike down to faron. I had faron work on it before, and I was totally happy with his work. I just had no way to get it to him this time. Otherwise, I would have.

I would like to point out, that before the carb work was done, the engine would turn and fire....chug chug chug, etc. Just wouldn't catch and crank over.

Now, they say it just spins, and has no compression. Like the spark plugs aren't in it.

It sounds like it did not necessarily "run" when he took it in??
Following the threads and having had some correspondence with 2dizzy offline I would say at this point to stop throwing good money after bad.

Before everyone hangs the shop based on 2dizzy's evaluation of the running condition of the bike and what they have maybe reported over the phone to him? why not let him get in there tomorrow in person, ask them to go over what work they performed and see the results of the compression test.
If the bike has low compression it has nothing to do with cleaning the carbs.. unless they are missing something on reassembly that is most likely easy to resolve.
There is a good chance that a bike that didn't run when it was dropped off might may not still run after a carb clean. I believe that is all he took to them to complete? Guys there is so much "grey area" here that regardless of your feelings toward Motoplex or dealerships in general..

If you want to help 2dizzy and show your PNW solidarity, why don't you go with him as Grant suggested and be a second set of ears and then help 2d understand what is really going on with his R6.

Just my .02 worth.

dizzy,

it sounds like u got sold a bad bike.. with all the problems u are having. im sorry to hear that, it sounds like there is a issue with the rings on the pistons or valves not closing, that could be a issues that are causing ur issues that u keep having this whole time. have one of the guys go with u to look at it and see what they have to say, im not sure on that bike of how the starter is connected to the crank to kick it over , but on my bike it has`a one way slipper clutch that could slip. so like someone else said put ur hand over the muffler and see if u can feel any air coming out. i wish u the best and hope it doesnt cost u too much more....


ps... i know u and barb dont like each other much but i now have her wanting to get a bike. we are looking at r6 for her too...

I totally agree with you. I'm not trying to get the shop flamed. They have done really good by me so far since I've had my bike. And they've been upfront. They have told me when they think, in their opinion, that it wouldn't be worth the time to fix the bike. And I fix it anyway.

I want to be clear on the condition of the bike BEFORE it went in the shop. It wasn't running. If it was running, I wouldn't have put it in the shop. The mechanic said i probably fouled the plugs and needed to readjust my carbs and floats and replace the plugs and that should allow it to run again. So I had the carbs cleaned, adjuted, jetted, and put back on.

My point in complaining was this........ BEFORE I took the bike to the shop, the engine would turn over. It made the chug chug chug sound like it was turning over and trying to catch, but just wouldn't get that last little spark. Which is why they suggest bad plugs and a need to do the carbs.

AFTER they put everything back together they say that it doesn't even make the chug chug chug sound. it just spins and makes a whine.

I'm not flaming the shop. They are pretty good people and usually do right by me. I just am upset and frustrated about the problem I'm having with the motor now.


Justin, I have no problems with Barb. An R6 would be a good bike for her. But at least get an '03 or new so it'd be fuel injected.

Shiny Side Up is under new owner ship now, basically. The mechanic who was working there is taking over. I believe they're pretty busy right now...and probably don't have much time for big headaches nor will they have quick turn around times.

What the problem is isn't the bike. It's that you've gone wrong somewhere. I don't know what, because I haven't read a majority of your threads (nothing personal, you understand) but you seem to make enough post suggesting you're making repeated mistakes in repairing your bike properly.

That said, I want to help you get it running - the best I can.

My question to you OP, why would the carbs need to be tuned? It sounded like your bike was running in the past. Why would you have done anything to your carbs that would have changed that, if it didn't improve it? Cleaning and jetting when necessary is one thing, but I'm not convinced it's necessary enough to be the big issue.

Oh, and going wrong can sometimes mean buying a pile of crap. I simply assume you're smart enough to smell a turd when it's sitting between your legs.
