No KLR here either. I have a XT600 though and I agree, we should organize a dirt oriented DS ride soon.

I've got an 08, picked it up from RMC last summer. We definitely need to get a DS ride going soon.

Guess it depends on where you live and what you are looking for. For me, some technical slower stuff can be found in Tahuya or Capitol Forest down south. Good trails and I've seen some KLRs out there although they are kind of big for the trails. I think my bike was even bordering big out there but I made it through the trails ok. Ideally a KDX250 is good for those kinds of trails although the 600s or 650s spank them once we hit pavement.

I've been running Dunlop 606's for about a year now and didn't realize they were 80% dirt 20% street. Good times are to be had on the street with tires like these and they are awesome in the trails.

Let's definitely get something together sometime this spring. There's got to be at least 6 or 7 DS'rs on this forum.

I bought a blue 08 KLR last September and have about 2000 miles on the bike now. There is a dirt road around North Bend called the River road or something like that. It only goes about 10 miles not due to a washed out bridge-otherwise I think its around 30 miles. I went a couple of weeks ago but got into snow after a couple of miles. Take the Sultan Basin Road out of Sultan and there are some dirt roads going up and around Spada Lake-but again there is snow right now. Also a place I have not gone to out of Sultan is Reiter Pits or Reiter Trails on Reiter road. I guess there are a lot of trails and some gravel roads too but overall it sound like a place more for more dirt oriented bikes than the KLR....but I haven't been there. Enjoy the bike!

Any fire/logging roads will do just fine! There are about billion miles of them in WA, not hard to find. A Washington Gazeteer is a good "atlas" of roads, you can pick one up at Shucks etc

Technical slow stuff and real ORV parks/trails are not really great for dual sports IMO, unless you like working extra hard at going extra slow. And they're definitely the worst possible place for a newbie to ride. That's what dirt bikes are for.

606s are a good dual sport tire, but yeah they are an 80/20 tire. Pirellli MT21s are also a good choice, same 80/20 mix.
