Moving to Yakima
Hi there everybody. My name is Ben and in October I will be moving from Texas up to Yakima. Recently I completely wrecked my red/black 06 GSXR 600. Before I replace it I want to make sure that it is worth getting another one and dragging it up there. Can anyone give me information like when is the riding season, how are the roads, do you have good twisty roads near Yakima, are there a lot of riders there, How is Washington when it comes to bike, etc, etc. Any help would be really appreciated

Sorry dawg...the Yakima section is relatively dead...but there's plenty of folks from other areas to meet up with and ride. The topography around here is awesome. There's all kinds of twisty backroads if that's the kinda riding you like.

Hit me up if you want when you get in town. We'll see about getting you set up with some good folks and good roads.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a buddy moving up with me and he will be buying a bike as well. I love the twisties so that is very good to hear. How long is the riding season? Is it just summer or can you still ride comfortably in spring/fall?

you can ride at least 9 months of the year, depends on snow.

There are people here who ride practically no matter what.

mike and i rode highway 12 (a mountain pass) in late February. Nothing like walking into the lodge and getting weird looks because you're in full gear...and everyone else is snowboarding. The roads are AMAZING, you got highway 410 that runs over mount rainier, highway 12, and other various shorter rides. In my opinion though, you'd be better off buying a bike when you get up here not hauling it. Unless its a temporary thing and you plan on having it licensed in texas.

My off season lasted about 3 weeks last December, when the roads were too icy to ride. My first ride to Packwood over White Pass was Jan. 11, but the fact of the matter is I'm insane. Ask any of the blokes who've ridden with me....rain or shine, I'm out on two.

I like to describe Yakima as, "Topographically excellent, but demographically lacking."

You'll be close to the Cascade mountain range. Excellent twisties and beautiful scenery. Oregon is a little further away, but it has excellent roads too.

I haven't spent much time in Texas, but you won't be disappointed with the Cascades.

Oh no, I agree. Yakima is a shitty place to live. But I've lived enough places now that I realize they're ALL shitty places to live, so you just gotta find the good in where you are.

The fact that the hills around this town are like the back of my hand now, is a good thing to me...

How is this for some day rides from Yakima?
Everything you see here can be ridden to and back home from Yakima in a single day.
Some of the roads are twisty in the extreme.
Given a whole weekend there is lots more, heck you can make Yellowstone in a single day, leave on Friday after work and a ride through Yellowstone and the Tetons isn't out of the realm of possibility for a weekend ride and certainly doable over a three day holiday weekend.
Welcome to the Pacific NW.

Awesome pictures Y2K. The scenery in Texas really blows so it will be nice to see some nice stuff while riding. Well now I'm starting to look forward to coming up. The only thing that sucks is I will be there just in time for winter. I guess I will have to say screw it to moving in and get out on the roads as soon as possible

Glad you enjoyed them but they pale in comparison to seeing it all in real life.
Once you get up here and have a Summer you'll have to see the Oregon Coast,Crater Lake National Park and many more great rides that will blow you away.
By the way I've ridden through a fair amount of Texas,we rode in through Eastern Oklahoma and South on back roads to Beaumont then down the Gulf coast to Galveston and Corpus Christi,North from there to San Antonio and a visit to The Alamo then West out to Fort Stockton where we turned North for Carlsbad NM.
All part of an 8000 mile ride to and through Sturgis SD and back taking the scenic route lol.

Wut?

Anyway, hit me up when you get in town. I know a lot of back routes in the area...to the point I can usually put together a decent ride based on how much free time you have for a ride. Only have 20 min.? I can arrange a route for that. Hour and a half? Different route. You get the idea.

nobody can compete w/ Y2K's choice of pics

Thanksgiving to Presidents' Day is pretty much a no ride season - so 9 months riding season; but you'll want warmer gear for 3 of those 9 months.
The 3 month winter is also approx. the season for cloud cover, which then dissipates for 9 months; and it will get hot, ~ west Texas dry hot minus 10-15 degrees.

WA state doesn't require liability insurance for M/C operation/registration, so as consequence it's fairly affordable.
One of the insurance favorites is State Farm, but I believe they require you to insure another vehicle w/ them before they'll insure a bike.

I've been told Texas will allow drivers to 'defer tickets' an unlimited # of times, but here it's once every 7 yrs. Car or M/C the same.

Seriously though the cops are cunts, they love to stop bikes and manufactur tickets if u wanna roll washington make sure u got cornering skills ride slow till u know the side and back roads then just know when they play flash flash they dont wanna hold hands, they are lookin to add to the state coffers so twist the right wrist and be gone.

Hey Benny,

I'm a fellow Texan and you're right, the scenery in the great state isn't comparable to this state. The guys are right, the Yakima forum isn't really active and is usually boring. The guys in the Tri-Cities are pretty active and stay on top of stuff. All a bunch of good guys and years of knowledge in riding. When you get here, hit me up and I'll show you around the Valley which is much like the Rio Grande Valley. Bunch of little towns connected together by a freeway. The roads nice around here for the most part. So hit me up when you get in town.

And this is the reason Yakima sucks for riders. Yes, the cops are jackoffs around here, but while trying to impress you with his testicular fortitude, apparently our boy doesn't realize that he is PART of the reason the cops are jackoffs here.

I got pulled one night at 1am, just getting off work and blowing off a little steam. I won't say how fast I was going, but I will say it was markedly faster than the posted limit. As I was slowing off, I saw a vehicle coming up behind me, REAL FAST. I knew what it was, and was signalling to pull over before he ever lit me up. I got off my bike, removed my key from the ignition, and put my hands on my helmet. The first thing out of his mouth, of course, was to ask me how fast I was going. But the second was to thank me for not tryin to run...because less than a month previous, another rider had killed himself after losing it only blocks away from where I was stopped, while trying to elude. I went home with a stern warning that night.

So, yeah, don't fool around anywhere near town. The locals are the worst, the staters are almost as bad, and the county can be a pain, but they don't usually bully up on you as much. Still and all, better to get out to the twisties if you want to have any fun on a bike.

Actually I don't ride in the shithole town of Crakima, hell I don't even drive there if I can avoid it. Between the morons who can't drive, the gangs wanting to shoot everything, the massivly corrupt police, the absolute shit roads, the anti-cruising laws, the fact you cna't even hang with friends for more than 5 minutes in any parking lot without the gestapo showing up I don't see any upside to that fuckhole. Nahh I'll stay here in Selah where the cops are not interested in emulating Yakima and where the roads arn't cracked and potholed all to hell, and the gangs are just a small neusience in the very very small hispanic population over by the the overpass.

Alright thanks for all the advice. I finally made it up here. Right now I'm rooming with a buddy in selah for about a week until I get my place in Yakima. I actually tried to ride north on 812? I think. (the caynon road to ellensburg). I did make it a little ways, up until I FROZE MY ASS OFF!!! I really need to dig out my liners before I head out again. So if anyone out there sees a white guy shivering on a 08 black gsxr just give me a wave!

Alright well I have all my cold weather gear except for my gloves. I'm going to try out some short rides until I get them in. The satilite guy should he done this morning and then I was thinking about taking the caynon road from selah to ellensburg to get some lunch and come back. If the guy takes to long I will probably just do it tomorrow. If anyone is free just hi me up at 360-473-7826 and let me know. Oh and one past thing, I can't go all out because the bike still has stock tires on it (I know I know, I was just putting it off until I moved)

Pastywhiteredhead one of your pictures looks like your doing 95 to 100 at the top of the mabton grade. In the mid 80's i was going that fast or faster when a 80.000lb wheat truck took alllll of the road turning off township rd. I hit the brakes both of them and pulled inside the fog line,i could ride a tighter line then, but it wasn't enough.the guy had the wheel cranked and at the last second i got ,not he gave me,too feet of room and i made it by. theirs a crossroad at the top of Alderdale rd. as well.and yes a stationwagon almost had a kz in the front seat. i slow down at the top of hills with blind corners and crossroads now.maybe thats why i'm 49, that and god looking after me
