| Endorsed Joined: May 2007 From: Toppenish I Ride: 2007 Candy Plasma Blue ZX14 | Memorial Day crash! I crashed the 10 on Memorial day and want to use my experience to reiterate the importance "riding within your limits"! I consider myself to be a good rider. Many years of experience. All the experience in the world can't prepare you enough for the unexpected. Such as a blind corner, just past the crest of a hill, after a somewhat long straight of small hills, on a road you've never ridden on before. Myself and a group of six others were on such a road and I was following the leader who had been on this road before. We just passed two vehicles and come up to the hill at a pretty high rate of speed. I don't know how fast because I didn't get a chance to look. Just before reaching the crest of the hill I could see that it was a right hand turn but was already going too fast to try and negotiate it. I knew at that instant that I was going to have to take it. Coming over the top of the hill my suspension is unloaded therefore not having as much traction as I would like to slow me down more. I will never forget how fast my mind was processing the whole situation that lasted probably less than a second and a half. As I applied both brakes as much as could, I thought to myself that I don't want to go into a slide with a guardrail coming so I'm going to keep it up and jump when the time comes. As I'm coming up to tha guard rail I notice a barbed wire fence on the other side about fifteen feet beyond the guardrail and my thoughts were "shit I'm gonna get sliced up"! I hit and flew through the barbed wire fence landing in a tuck and roll, coming to a rest about another fifteen to twenty feet from the fence, down into a ravine. I come to rest on all fours and see a bunch of crap coming out of my nose into my helmet and thought it was blood, turns out that it wasn't. I then stood up, walked uphill a bit, crawled under the fence I had just broken, limped over to the guardrail, crawled over it and one of my friends is in my face telling me to look at him. He told me a few times until I finally looked at him because I was still in kind of a daze. After that I took my gloves off, then my helmet and went to see the bike that had landed about twelve feet from the guardrail from bouncing off it. I will post pics tomorrow, it's in my garage right now. I came out lucky! A broken foot which hit the guardrail as I went over. Multiple fractures, I was told something like 14 in total. My right arm and shoulder are pretty bruised from the landing. Yes I had full leathers on. I figured that I hit at about 70MPH. The sheriff said that sounds about right after looking at the scene and doing his calculations with the long skidmark, and size of dent in the guardrail and damage to the bike, which will probably be wrote off as totalled. Like I said, I was lucky! I want everyone to remember that no matter how good you are, there will always be something you're not prepared for. If you're on a road you've never been on before, TAKE IT EASY, at least ONCE! Even if it's a straight, because there might be potholes or something. Always wear your gear, even if it's hot. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! RIDE SAFE Y'ALL! |

If not, send to me via picturemail on my phone so I can post them! I can't stress enough how seeing the pics of my bike and knowing that I only broke my foot, is not enough to grasp the total seriousness that this crash is! |

| Pit Crew | Burnrubber1, As I read your story it brought back memories for myself of my own accident on May 11th. Like you said, no matter what your riding experience is there's always surprises lurking. In my case it was the condition of the roadway along the RR tracks. At a distance I couldn't tell anything was wrong until I was almost on top of it leaving me no time to navigate around it properly. Ride Safe everyone! |

What are you going to do with thte bike?? |

The biggest part for me is that you're taking responsiblity for the crash and you're posting with the intention of showing all riders how quickly this can happen...a speedy recovery to you! |

Thanks for sharing your story, the silver lining of your painful experience is we will all learn from your crash. Second, my hubby and I were at the stoplight on 16th and Nob Hill when your group left town. I said "HEY ... those are the PNW riders!! If I'd have gone to bike night, I would have met them, and I'd be in that formation right now, instead of headed home to do yard work." Be well. Heal fast. Ride soon. |

Good write up... any body have pic's of the guard rail - I imagine your bike left a mighty big dent, or more. |

Lucky enough that I had full insurance and gap coverage. My banker says that I'm gonna be comin' out like a bandit when it's all said and done. |
